Ravenswood’s second episode “Death and a Maiden” provided riveting surprises to audiences with a big event. What follows is a recap so beware of spoilers.

The episode picks up where Ravenswood’s series premiere ended, with the five teens going over the bridge into the water in their car and the teens rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. Miranda (Nicole Gale Anderson) is in serious condition as Remy (Britne Oldford) is visibly shaken up and proclaims that the accident was not her fault. As viewers remember Miranda grabbed the wheel as she saw something in the road. Miranda crashes and dies as Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) looks on. Looks like the ghost theories were right if Ravenswood viewers can expect to see her around still.

Olivia (Merritt Patterson) and Luke (Brett Dier) stick together as they try to grapple with the death of a girl they barely knew while Caleb flips out when an orderly tries to take Remy’s blood. Luke tries to calm Caleb done with no success and tensions are high when Remy’s parents show up and blame Luke.

Luke and Olivia’s mother Rochelle (Laura Allen) shows up and is visibly hostile to the police office and to Remy’s father (Henry Simmons). This makes sense as most of the town does consider a black widow. Apparently their father was the mayor of Ravenswood. Caleb visits Miranda down in the morgue, where Miranda was mistakenly labeled a Jane Doe. Caleb takes advantage of the coroner’s kindness and pilfers through Miranda’s things when he hears a banging against the metal cabinet and the radio suddenly turns on. Raymond Collins (Steven Cabral), Miranda’s uncle turns up and takes Miranda’s body. Apparently her foster family did not care that Miranda took off to Ravenswood.

Mrs. Grunwald (Meg Foster) convinces Collins to extend an offer of hospitality to Caleb as he is otherwise homeless in Ravenswood. As Remy’s father interrogates her about the accident, her mother Terry (Sophina Brown) intervenes seeing that she’s upset. Luke’s mother warns them not to talk to the police or Remy and congratulates a stunned Olivia that she won Homecoming Queen.

Caleb has a talk with a dead Miranda who seems very much alive telling Caleb to retrieve items from her bag and showing him the figure she saw before she died. Mrs. Grunwald asks if Caleb has talked to Hanna (Ashley Benson) and relays the information that Allison (Sasha Pieterse) is not coming back. Mrs. Grunwald helps keep order for Collins and maintains her belief in the immortality of the soul. Could this be a reference to Haleb’s relationship?

Remy looks back into Ravenswood’s history and finds that five people die regularly there. She is interrupted by Luke throwing rocks outside her window, a typical romance trope, as they meet in the darkness. The two reconnect and decide not to focus on the previous night’s events.

Objects begin to move as Caleb recites poetry while Collins tries to cut into Miranda. The mirror in front of Caleb breaks and he is stunned into wondering what’s going on in Ravenswood.

As seen in a preview clip, Luke shows their father’s letter to Olivia, that he believes points to their mother’s guilt. He accuses their mother of cheating and Olivia incensed tears the letter up. Do you think she’ll regret this?

Caleb lies to Hanna about Miranda’s current state, not wanting her to worry. Caleb shows up to school in order to catch Remy and ask for help in retrieving Miranda’s belongings from Remy’s car, now in the junkyard. Remy agrees to help and confesses that she has investigated more about the mysterious series of incidents. Caleb does not go to Ravenswood’s school, so is he skiving off school while he’s in Ravenswood?

Luke confronts his bully Zach Springer (Brock Kelly) who refuses to answer whether or not he dumped paint on Miranda. Dillon (Luke Benward) and Olivia share a cute moment when Tess (Haley Lu Richardson) happens to interrupts them. Luke asks Remy to skip out on Caleb and spend time with him but she refuses. It does not seem like a bromance is happening anytime soon.

The Police Chief questions Caleb about his relationship with Miranda as well as her motivations behind grabbing the wheel. The Police Chief’s theory is that Miranda had emotional issues and hid her true nature from Caleb. Since she is presumably a main character on Ravenswood, we know this isn’t true.

In another scene previewed by Hypable, Luke is almost crushed by his weights when an invisible force pushes down on him as the school bully just happens to walk by.  Collins and Mrs. Grunwald discuss whether or not Caleb will stay as he does not react well to her advice. When Caleb and Remy go to the junkyard, Caleb decides to jump the fence and risks the attack of a guard dog, locking him in a car. Not the most animal-friendly action.

At Olivia’s Homecoming photo shoot, Tess tries to pump Olivia up for her big moment. It almost works until Tess sees an incoming call with a provocative picture of Tess and Springer. Remy explains her theory to Caleb with no explanation on why they were spared. The car’s radio turns on and the guard dog escapes as Remy is stuck in the car window. Caleb manages to grab Remy and the two run for the gate when Remy falls. Luke suddenly appears and manages to fight off the dog using his jacket. When Caleb goes to thank him, Luke decks him angry over his endangerment of Miranda and grabs her to leave.

Olivia and Tess fight over Tess dating Olivia and Luke’s tormentor as Olivia hands Tess her crown. Tess put on the crown and looks a little too satisfied when she looks in the mirror.

Collins and Caleb discuss the funeral arrangements and Collins offers Caleb a place until the funeral. Remy sleepwalks and is almost hit by a car when it suddenly stops and her parents rush out to save her. Her father’s worried look conveys that he knows more about the series of incidents than he has let on.

Olivia questions her mother on if she and her father were getting a divorce. Rochelle admits that the two were having a rough time and dodges the question of if she was seeing anyone else. What do you think?

As Caleb reads Miranda’s mother’s letter, Miranda suddenly appears. Caleb thinks Miranda is alive however she hampers his hope and says she is dead. Looks like Ravenswood has a resident ghost after all. Miranda is unsure how she is a ghost or why she is able to communicate with Caleb as he apologizes for being unable to save her. Miranda asks if she can stay with Caleb as she is stuck in the manor as well. She is unsure what the figure was on the bridge and when one looks in the mirror we see that Caleb is talking to no one. Is he the only one that can see her? Do you think Collins knows?

What did you think of tonight’s twist? Do you like that Ravenswood is exploring the ghost angle? Which characters do you like?
