Netflix’s Raising Dion has given us a sneak peak at the upcoming superhero show about a young boy with superpowers and the single mom who is raising him.

The long-gestating Raising Dion is finally here, and Netflix is whetting our appetite with a few first looks and a release date.

The superhero TV show actually began development back in 2017, but was postponed to curtail any comparisons to another Netflix original with a superpowered youngster — a little show you may have heard of called Stranger Things.

Raising Dion, based on on a comic book and short film by director Dennis Liu, is the story of Nicole, a widow who struggles to raise her son Dion after the death of her husband Mark and the revelation that Dion has superpowers. Now Nicole must contend with not only being a single mom, but protecting Dion from those who want to find him and exploit his powers.

Raising Dion follows Nicole as she both investigates the mysterious circumstances of her husband’s death and the origins of Dion’s powers. She’ll be helped along the way by Mark’s best friend, Pat, who has known Mark and his family since college.

Raising Dion’s cast includes Alisha Wainwright, from the show Shadowhunters stars as Nicole, while newcomer Ja’Siah Young plays her son Dion. Michael B. Jordan, in addition to executive producing for the show, will likewise play Nicole’s dead husband Mark. Jason Ritter, known for his work on Gravity Falls will play Mark’s best friend, Pat. Jazmyn Simon will play Kat Neese, a surgical resident and Nicole’s sister, while Sammi Hanney will Esperanza Jimenez, a classmate of Dion’s who eventually becomes his best friend.

Raising Dion received a direct to series order last year, with nine episodes slated for the upcoming first season, which will premiere on Netflix on October 4.
