Terrence Malick is a prolific filmmaker, to be certain, although he has a history of cutting famous actors out of the final edit of his films. His upcoming film To the Wonder is no different, as the likes of Rachel Weisz, Amanda Peet, Barry Pepper, and Michael Sheen have been cut from the final version of the film.

Briefly, a bit of background on Malick’s history of cutting actors entirely out of his film. The greatest example of this is with The Thin Red Line, which saw Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Sheen, Gary Oldman, Bill Pullman, Lukas Haas, Viggo Mortensen and Mickey Rourke all be cut from the film. Also, Adrien Brody was cast as the lead and his performance was eventually cut down to the length of a cameo.

Now, as The Playlist reports, Weisz, Peet, Pepper and Sheen have all had minor roles cut from the final version of To the Wonder.

The film, which is set to hit Toronto and Venice International Film Festivals next month, “centers on a Midwestern man (Ben Affleck) who returns from Europe with a new woman (Olga Kurylenko) who he marries when he returns to America, only to wind up falling for a childhood sweetheart (Rachel McAdams).”

To the Wonder does not yet have distribution, so it’s unclear when it will hit theaters. What are your thoughts on this? Are you disappointed to hear of the cuts, or still eager to see it?
