American audiences can expect to see Doctor Who‘s Jenna Coleman as Queen Victoria in 2017.

PBS announced at the TCAs that new British miniseries Victoria will air in the U.S. in Downton Abbey‘s old timeslot, on PBS’ Masterpiece. It’s set to premiere some time in 2017.

In ITV’s historical drama, former Doctor Who companion Jenna Coleman plays Queen Victoria, widely regarded as one of the most powerful women in history.

The young Queen Victoria lived from 1819 – 1901. She went from a sheltered teenager (and would later describe her childhood as “rather melancholy”) to a reigning monarch, inheriting the throne at age 18. Victoria — a woman, with only a distant claim to the throne — was the closest legitimate successor to King George III only because her father and his three older brothers had already passed away, leaving no other heirs.

Although Victoria’s power as a reigning monarch was limited by a constitution, with Britain having an established system of government, she used whatever power she had to influence policies.

She had strong personal morals, and had nine children with her husband (and first cousin) Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

Says Masterpiece exec Rebecca Eaton in a statement, “Victoria has it all: a riveting script, brilliant cast, and spectacular locations. And it’s a true story! This is exactly the kind of programming Masterpiece fans will love.”

Victoria has previously been immortalized by Emily Blunt in the 2009 movie The Young Victoria, with Rupert Friend playing Prince Albert.

The eight-episode miniseries was created by Daisy Goodwin. It also stars Tom Hughes, Eve Myles, Rufus Sewell and Peter Firth.
