Queen of Hearts: The Wonder by Colleen Oakes is the second book in the series that follows the Queen of Hearts as she turns from an innocent princess to the infamous villain.

The Wonder by Colleen Oakes is the sequel to The Crown, which first introduced us to Dinah, the daughter of the King of Hearts, and the successor to his throne.

After the events of the first book, however, things are not looking up for Dinah. And they don’t seem to be getting any better.

Now on the run in the Twisted Wood, Dinah must make her way through the forest on her own with Morte, a monstrous beast that has a taste for killing. And while she must walk the line between trusting him and being wary of his power, there are many more dangers beyond the trees.

‘The Wonder’ review

While The Crown focused on the events leading up to Dinah’s escape from her father’s palace, The Wonder explores everything that happened in the wake of her rebelliousness. For those that enjoyed Dinah’s wilder side from the first book, this sequel will bring you more of what you want.

This book also introduces a new character named Sir Gorrann, who will become instrumental to Dinah’s survival. His character is well-fleshed out and not altogether likeable, which makes us even more interested in him and his motives. After spending several chapters with only her steed, it was nice to see another human being make his way into her life.

The Wonder shows us more of the Wonderland countryside, and more of Dinah’s true nature. Her anger becomes even harder to control, and causes her to make some dangerous decisions. The tendrils of the Queen of Hearts we all know and loathe are beginning to snake forward, and it’s easy to see how someone like Dinah could end up becoming such a monstrous villain.
