Ever since last episode’s big reveal, suspicions about Caleb being the Voice have been rising. Will Quantico season 1, episode 18, “Soon,” change that?

When that car window rolled down and Shelby was in the driver’s seat, she wasn’t the only one implicated. Shelby has been closely linked to one other person throughout the entire Quantico series, so when we saw her, many fans, like the ones below, instantly thought of Caleb, too!

It doesn’t help that he has basically been doing one suspicious thing or another since we met him, but could he really be the Voice? Based on the evidence we’ve seen so far, we really don’t see why not! The fact that we haven’t seen him for quite a while in the Grand Central timeline makes the “Caleb is the Voice” theory even more plausible.

However, the Quantico showrunner, Josh Safran, has something to say about that! According to his weekly EW blog, the whole theory could be derailed in Quantico season 1, episode 18.

Safran mentioned that the first clue to Caleb’s potential innocence lay in the Quantico season 1, episode 17 scene where Caleb gives Shelby’s parents money to take off and leave Shelby alone.

He said, “I know it’s kind of crazy and feels like it’s convoluted, but follow the money. The money [the parents] take with them has been in place for a while, and this is its end point. We thought it was the money Mark Raymond put in the bank in episode 11 and then was used to get safety deposit boxes that would then be turned into bombs, and instead, we realize that Mark Raymond was going to give that money to Systemics, and instead of giving it to Systemics, he’s using it to pay off Shelby’s parents. So it’s an interesting little arc there that tells you that Caleb is most likely not the bomber, if you thought he was, in episode 11.”

While that makes things look a little better for Caleb, “likely not the bomber,” is still not a guarantee of innocence, even coming from the showrunner. When pressed further, he continued, “it tells us that Caleb is most likely not the bomber. In the very next episode, you see a surprising new side to Caleb; so for right now, it looks like he’s not the bomber.”

Another side of Caleb? He has already shown us so many confusing sides! We already know the sarcastic Caleb we see in classes at Quantico, the sweet Caleb who cares for Shelby, the destructive and controlling Caleb who is prone to self-sabotaging, the Mark Raymond side who is seeking revenge on Systemics and freedom for his friend (this one could actually still be a cover-up for something else), and the bruised Caleb who has been betrayed by Shelby and his father. What else could there be?

The fact that there are so many facets of his personality only makes Caleb more suspicious, and fans aren’t the only ones who are onto him. Now that she knows about Shelby’s involvement, Alex is beginning to doubt her former classmate, too. This sneak peek for Quantico season 1, episode 18 shows Alex contacting Caleb’s mother for more information:

It looks like, at the very least, we will get to see Caleb again in the Grand Central timeline. His mother has known his whereabouts this whole time, so between her, Alex’s interrogation skills, and Caleb himself, we should get a decent explanation of what he has been up to this whole time.

As far as the opinion that Caleb is “likely not the bomber” goes, you’ll have to decide for yourself if you agree when we hear his side of the story in Quantico season 1, episode 18.
