Update (10/23/19):Freddie Prinze Jr. is returning to the small screen.

According to Deadline, actor Freddie Prinze Jr. has officially joined the cast of NBC’s upcoming Punky Brewster revival.

Set to premiere exclusively via the network’s forthcoming streaming platform, Peacock, the Punky Brewster revival is being pegged as a continuation of the beloved 80s sitcom.

Original series star Soleil Moon Frye is already on board to reprise her role as a grown up version of the titular character in the revival.

As for Prinze Jr., the 90s heartthrob has joined the cast in what is being described as “a key recurring role.”

Specifically, Prinze Jr. will play Punky’s ex-husband Travis. Travis works as a musician, which requires him to travel out of town often. That being said, he’s still described as being a great dad to the child he and Punky have together.

As for Travis and Punky, though the pair may be exes, the two still have some “lingering chemistry,” which should make for some interesting moments between the two.

Currently, there’s no word with regards to when we can expect the revival to hit Peacock (which launches in April.)

Original Story (6/4/19):A grown up version of Punky Brewster will soon be making her way to the small screen.

It looks like Punky Brewster is gearing up to follow in the footsteps of Full House and Boy Meets World.

According to TV Insider, the popular 1980s sitcom is officially getting the revival treatment.

First premiering on September 16, 1984 on NBC, the original iteration of the sitcom told the story of a young girl who must fend for herself after her father walks out of the family, and her mother abandons her.

After discovering a vacant apartment building in a local Chicago building, Punky (Soleil Moon Frye) forms an unlikely bond with building manager Henry Warnimont (George Gaynes), who eventually becomes her foster father.

The series ran until March 9, 1986 and spawned an animated spinoff, It’s Punky Brewster, which ran from September 1985 to December 1986.

The forthcoming reboot will find Frye returning to reprise the titular role. This time around, she’s all grown up and a single mother of three. While trying to get her life on track, Punky will come face to face with a young girl who reminds her of her younger self.

School of Rock and Grounded For Life vets Steve and Jim Armogida will spearhead the forthcoming revival, serving as writers and executive producers.

In addition to starring in the series, Frye will also serve as an executive producer along with original series creator David Duclon.

There’s currently no word on who else will join Frye and star in the series, or when we can expect it to make its way to air.
