MTV’s beloved Punk’d series, which has been off air since 2007, has a new shot at life thanks to the big screen.

Punk’d co-creator Jason Goldberg is developing “a series of [Punk’d-style] movies around the $5 million budget range that would ideally be released around the April Fool’s holiday,” says The Hollywood Reporter.

The first film in the Punk’d movie series will have nine to ten pranks, according to THR, “and include celebrities ranging from comedians to dramatic actors to music and sports figures.”

At this time we don’t know what the common thread will be through all of the pranks in the film — will there be one host (like Kutcher) who will help pull off each stunt? Will all of the pranks have a certain theme? Or will it just be a grab bag of fun?

The idea of a Punk’d film series will surely draw comparisons to what Paramount is doing with the Jackass franchise. The original Jackass TV series ran from 2000 to 2002 on MTV and later became a movie series. The most recent film, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, opened in theaters October 2013.

There were some legendary pranks on Punk’d, including Kutcher’s epic take down of Justin Timberlake:

Punk’d ran from 2003 to 2007 on MTV, and a revival series ran in 2012. THR says there’s currently no title for the new film series, but if they want to ensure as much success as possible, keeping the name “Punk’d” is probably a good idea.

Would you go to a theater to see a ‘Punk’d’ movie?

Putting it on an April Fool’s Day weekend sounds like a great idea for those moviegoers who live for the hijinks.
