The Psych 100th episode is rapidly approaching its March 27 air date, but executives don’t have to worry about finishing the 40-minute episode. They’re leaving that decision to the viewers.

For perhaps the first time in cable television history, real-time results will determine a pre-recorded episode’s finale. The episode, entitled “100 Clues” will take on the Clue game’s signature moves in a whodunnit-like way. A brief synopsis was released by The Hollywood Reporter.

Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dule Hill) are invited to a mysterious party at a historic Santa Barbara mansion by Billy Lipps, a rock star whom Shawn and the Santa Barbara Police Department had sent to prison five years earlier for murder. When a deadly crime is committed, five suspects emerge: the Butler, the Groupie, the Manager, the Author and the Host.

Viewers on both coasts will be able to vote throughout the episode on the Psych website or by tweeting a hashtag, such as #PsychButlerDDit, #PsychGroupieDDit, etc, corresponding to each possible offender. Results will appear on-screen during the episode.

Out of three potential conclusions, two will be made available on-demand and online following the episode airing, with the third ending being included as a special feature in the season 7 DVD set. We’d assume USA would allow each coast to vote for their own ending during their respective airings, and then those two are the ones that would become available.

Guest stars slated to appear on this episode include Garrett Morris, Martin Mull, Christopher Lloyd, Curt Smith and Lesley Ann Warren.

This is a great way to capitalize on USA Network and Psych‘s huge ratings and fan-base. USA Network is the number one cable network for seven years running – which, perhaps coincidentally, is how long our favorite fake psychics have been on the air. Dunkin’ Donuts has partnered with Psych for this milestone episode (hence the ‘DD’ in the hashtags).

This 100th episode is just one of two huge events we can expect from Psych season 7, the second being a two-hour musical episode that was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con last year.
