Marking the longest wait between PlayStation consoles, the PS5 release date likely won’t be until 2021.

The PlayStation 4 released in 2013, making the time thus far 5 years since we’ve seen a new PlayStation console hit the market.

Today’s announcement of the PS5 release date comes from Sony’s head of PlayStation, John Kodera. Kodera states, “We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future.”

This is an expected business decision for Sony, seeing as the typical release schedule for every other PlayStation console has ranged between six and seven years. With three more years added on to the PS5 release date, this could mean that the next PlayStation console will take a total of 7 years to hit the market.

The competition with Microsoft’s Xbox consoles and Nintendo’s Switch has been heating up over the past couple of years, with the Switch reaching massive sales numbers in its relatively short time on store shelves.

Nintendo has seemingly done away with console wars, as the Switch released nowhere near any other major Microsoft or Sony console. It will be up to Microsoft to decide whether or not they want to go head to head with Sony with their Xbox predecessor.

The PlayStation 4 has seen Sony realize over 500 million in console sales for their PlayStation line, leading to the release of the blue translucent PS4 and periphery. It’s probably not a stretch of the imagination that the PS5 will continue to help Sony’s massive console sales.
