Ridley Scott has confirmed that his next project will be Prometheus 2, a decision which will delay the planned Alien revival.

It looks like Ridley Scott won’t find time for the Blade Runner sequel any time soon, despite flirting with the idea of directing the long-awaited follow-up.

Instead, Scott will stay stranded in space, moving from The Martian to Prometheus 2.

The first Prometheus movie, which premiered in 2012, was set up to be a prequel of sorts to the Alien series, despite hardly relating to the 1979 original.

It starred Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw, an ill-fated astronaut who lost most of her crew while on a quest to discover the origins of mankind. Michael Fassbender played the android David, with Charlize Theron, Idris Elba and Guy Pearce also starring.

While promoting The Martian, in theaters next month, Ridley Scott told Empire that he’s already location scouting for Prometheus 2, wiping out any doubt that this is his next project.

Despite the mixed reception to the first movie, which had a script by Damon Lindelof, Prometheus 2 sounds like it’ll be a promising space adventure. Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender are expected to reprise their roles, as they continue the search for the home planet of the Engineer.

The only downside to this is that we’ll have to wait longer for Alien 5, Neill Blomkamp’s proposed sequel set to wipe out the contentious Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection.

20th Century Fox has officially put the project into development, but Scott has previously expressed a desire to push the Prometheus-verse ahead of Alien 5.

Who knows, perhaps the two stories will end up being linked? A geek can dream…
