Ryan Gosling just can’t get enough of outer space. He’s officially heading back up there for Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary adaptation.

Ryan Gosling will take up Matt Damon’s The Martian mantle as the star of the latest Andy Weir adaptation to be announced. He will star in and produce Project Hail Mary, THR is reporting. With a star already in place, this adaptation is getting way ahead of the game, since the book won’t even be released until spring 2021!

Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary “centers on an astronaut on a spaceship that is tasked with saving the planet.” Ryan Gosling will play that astronaut with the weight of the world on his shoulders.

According to THR, MGM is currently in negotiations for the project, which Ryan Gosling would produce alongside Ken Kao. This is the second Andy Weir adaptation currently in the works, following the success of 2015’s the Martian. Artemis, which is about a conspiracy on the first and only city on the moon, is currently in the works at Universal with Phil Lord and Chris Miller set to direct.

With such a huge star signed on to take the lead, MGM must have a lot of faith in the success of Andy Weir’s next novel, which has yet to be released. With this kind of support right out of the gate, we can’t wait to see what this new space story has to offer.
