The will-they-won’t-they whiplash for Princess Diaries 3 is giving us a headache, but it looks like it is actually, finally, okay maybe happening.

In June we told you Princess Diaries 3 was going to happen. And then we updated our article and said it wasn’t going to happen. Well, now we’re writing a whole new article to say it is happening! At least for now.

But instead of just an insider rumor, Director Garry Marshall told People that both he and star Anne Hathaway are on board with making the film.

Just a few weeks ago Marshall was talking to Hathaway about the potential third movie, and both seem to be on the same page. In fact, they’ve talked about having it take place in New York, which would be a return to the States for Mia Thermopolis, though still away from her original San Franciscan home.

Details are still light, as there’s been no official go-ahead just yet, though an interest from the director and star is certainly grounds to get the ball rolling. Anne Hathaway is currently pregnant, which means she won’t be jumping in right away, and will more than likely take some time away from set life following the birth of her child.

Marshall also spoke about the possible involvement of Chris Pine, who he says is “quite big now” in terms of star power. But Marshall still has an in with him, considering Pine’s father is in Marshall’s latest movie, Mother’s Day. Who knows what can happen!

With the recent onslaught of reunions and reboots and remakes, we have to question the need for Princess Diaries 3. Is it because these people want to revisit this story and the characters, or is it because they think it’ll be a hit? Can they give us something new and different while still paying homage to the beloved original(s)? Time will tell.
