Billy Magnussen will soon be reprising his live action Aladdin role— this time over at Disney+

Prince Anders may not have made the best impression on Princess Jasmine in Disney’s live action remake of Aladdin, but it’s clear that the studio is hoping the visiting royal might draw in audiences over at Disney+.

Disney is currently in the process of developing an Aladdin spinoff centered on Prince Anders for its online streaming site.

Billy Magnussen, who portrayed the royal in director Guy Ritchie’s live action adaptation, is already on board to reprise his role as the prince in question. Interestingly, it sounds as though Magnussen played a pivotal role in getting the spinoff off the ground.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the spinoff was actually Magnussen’s idea.

“He approached producers with an idea for the spinoff and was involved in meeting with writers,” writes the outlet in their report.

Magnussen isn’t the only one involved with the project. In addition, Jordan Dunn and Michael Kvamme have also boarded the project to pen the script. Meanwhile, Aladdin producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will also serve as producers on the Prince Anders spinoff movie.

If you’re a bit perplexed with regards to why Disney is looking into a Prince Anders spinoff movie, you aren’t alone.

In fact, news of the spinoff has drawn quite a bit of criticism from fans online.

Specifically, quite a few have pointed out that it seems a bit counter productive to focus a live-action Aladdin spinoff on the only character of the film who was not a person of color.

Others have pointed out that the move seems a bit tone deaf given that the announcement comes just days after actor Meena Massoud (who played Aladdin in the film) revealed in an interview with The Daily Beast that he hasn’t “had a single audition since” the movie came out.

With that in mind, it’ll be interesting to see how Disney and everyone involved with the spinoff handles the criticism that’s already rolling in.
