Before you even had time to miss Pretty Little Liars, Freeform is bringing a piece of it back.
It’s official. Freeform has picked up a pilot for The Perfectionists, an adaptation of the book series of the same name by Pretty Little Liars author, Sara Shepard. The best part is, the Pretty Little Liars ties don’t end there! The PLL creator, I. Marlene King, is developing the pilot and Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish are reprising their roles as Ali and Mona, respectively!
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like The Perfectionists will return to Rosewood. The spinoff will be set in a town called Beacon Heights.
According to a press release from Freeform, here’s what to expect from The Perfectionists: “Everything about the town of Beacon Heights seems perfect, from their top-tier college to their overachieving residents. But nothing in Beacon Heights is as it appears to be. The stress of needing to be perfect leads to the town’s first murder. Behind every Perfectionist is a secret, a lie and a needed alibi.”
From that description, it definitely sounds like a return to the essence of Pretty Little Liars! The Hollywood Reporter adds that this project has been in development since 2014.
At this point, we’re not sure how Ali and Mona will fit into the new series. The Pretty Little Liars series finale had Alison raising a family with Emily. Could The Perfectionists secretly be the Emison spinoff that we’ve been waiting for, or does this mean trouble for the couple? Equally confusingly, Mona was in Paris raising Alex and Mary Drake as her own personal Barbie dolls, in the finale. How will either of these ladies end up in Beacon Heights?
There’s no word on whether or not other Pretty Little Liars characters will appear in The Perfectionists, but if Ali and Mona are involved, we’d say it’s only a matter of time before more characters are announced. With everyone’s lives being so intertwined, it’d be confusing if we didn’t see anyone else! Either way, we can’t wait to get back into the non-stop mystery of the Pretty Little Liars world, and to see some of our favorite characters again.
