Pretty Little Liars continued to place the girls’ lives in jeopardy with college applications, stress, and murder omnipresent in the fourth season’s second episode “Turn of the Shoe.” What follows is a recap, so naturally spoilers are included from this episode.

The episode begins after Detective Wilden’s (Bryce Johnson) funeral where Hanna (Ashley Benson) worries about her mother while she has her cell phone, Spencer (Troian Bellisario) theorizes about the lodge, and Emily (Shay Mitchell) wonders about Melissa’s (Torrey DeVitto) whereabouts. Mona’s (Janel Parrish) loyalties continue to be questioned so she offers the Pretty Little Liars a free search of her RV.

The RV is missing and the girls suspect Mona until she almost choked to death by A. A grabs control of Mona’s car and Emily suffers an injury as she dodges the incoming car. Hanna’s mom, Ashley (Laura Leighton), returns and seems secretive about her New York trip and lies about losing her phone.

Spencer receives a rejection letter from University of Pennsylvania after a rough semester. As Hypable previewed, Hanna approaches Shana (Aeriel Miranda) about her no-show at Wilden’s funeral and her friendship with Jenna (Tammin Sursok). Emily and Paige (Lindsey Shaw) envision their future at Stanford and talk about their upcoming swim meet despite Emily’s injury.

Toby (Keegan Allen) acts evasive about his plans and knowledge of Mona’s attack while Spencer tries to skip school. Spencer confides about her rejection in Ezra (Ian Harding) and reveals the family pressure to get in. Fitz offers her help in applying to other schools and working on her college essay.

Hanna rifles through her mom’s suitcase and discovers her expensive shoes destroyed. Could that be from blood perhaps?

Aria looks for Holden (Shane Coffey) at the local self-defense place after her spook the previous evening. Hanna’s mom continues to be defensive about her clothes while Hanna is approached by Mrs. DiLaurentis to take Ali’s (Sasha Pieterse) old parrot. The parrot eerily echoes Ali in her words and tone.

Ezra tries to give Spencer some friendly advice to not be too honest in her admission essays, serving only to set Spencer off on a rant. As Hypable also previewed, Aria has trust issues with her karate instructor (Ryan Guzman) as she reveals that she’s worried due to her size.

In a flashback, it’s revealed that Ali was worried about the stability of the friend group while trying to wheedle her mom into letting her stay down at the Jersey Shore. Ali throws a temper tantrum while holding her breath and gets her way. What do you think was really going on? Would you want to take the bird?

Aria kisses her karate instructor, Jake, and runs out flustered and confused, not before rescuing Mona from a cop. Toby admits to moving the RV in order to find out information on his mother’s suicide. Shana tries to intimidate Emily for the Stanford scholarship but not before Emily drugs up. After reading Radley’s notes, Toby thinks his mother was murdered.

Emily hits her head in the pool and has to be escorted out by paramedics. Meanwhile Hanna brings Ali’s parrot over to Spencer’s to prove her theory while Hanna thinks her mom may have been involved in Wilden’s death based on her muddy high heels.

Spencer figures out that the parrot Tibby is repeating a phone number rather than a song. Do you think the number is someone Ali called that summer?

Jake visits Aria and ironically gives her an out due to their teacher-student relationship. Aria takes him up for a coffee date and begins to move on from Ezra. Emily confides in Paige about how she got her shoulder injured and why she hit her head.

Spencer figures out the telephone number while A abducts Tibby from Spencer’s room. Poor bird. Ashley attempts to dump her shoes while A feeds Tibby in the last scene.

What was your favorite moment in “Turn of the Shoe”? Do you think Ashley is guilty? Do you like this season of Pretty Little Liars so far?
