On tonight’s episode of Pretty Little Liars, Toby possibly finds the murder weapon but it causes tension between him and Spencer.

Tonight’s episode of Pretty Little Liars opens up with Toby heading to the prison on official policeman duties. We have to say, he’s going to have to toughen up and be more confident if he’s going to make it in this business. Alison is conveniently locked up on a bench right outside the counter that Toby visits. She’s not wearing any makeup (obviously) and still looks beautiful. All right, now we officially hate her. She tells Toby that he needs to convince the girls to talk to her or else they’ll either end up in jail with her or dead.

Em needs cash

At school the girls are trying to figure out just how Alison got that “A” to appear in the sky with the fireworks. They believe that Alison has to have someone else helping her and they all believe that it must by Holbrook since they saw him and Ali swapping spit at the Christmas party. In the midst of all this discussion, the girls are still talking about college, which immediately makes Aria run in the opposite direction. Emily follows her and learns that Aria hasn’t gotten into any of the schools she applied to. Emily responds by telling her that she needs a raise so she can go see Paige in California. The two problems are obviously of equal importance.

Later that day at The Brew, Ezra is getting ready for the opening party of the book store when his caterer flakes on him. Emily steps up and says she can do it even though she can’t cook. Does anyone else think Emily is being a little selfish in this episode? First she doesn’t really care about her best friend getting rejected from college and now she’s offering to help Ezra when she knows she really can’t.

Aria is also there and Ezra overhears the two girls talking about Aria trying to get into Talmidge. The jig is up, but Ezra is super cool about it all. He also suggests that the Talmidge wait-listing probably has to do with his ex-girlfriend, Jackie, being on the board of admissions.

The murder weapon

Over at Mrs. DiLaurentis’s old office, Jason stops in to see Ashley. He knows she is looking for another job, but he practically gets on his knees to beg her so she will stay for one more month. The poor boy is clearly disheveled, and we learn he won’t talk to Alison when she tries to call him.

Policeman Toby is out on a search with the rest of his team. They are all looking for the murder weapon in the woods behind Mona’s house. Within a solid 15 seconds Toby stumbles upon it but never tells any of the other cops. It turns out it was a knife that had been taken from Toby’s cabin, which could have his or Caleb’s fingerprints on it. Caleb strangely isn’t really into the idea of the knife just laying around waiting to be found, so he and Spencer head out to find it.

The same night, Hanna sneaks away from a college visit to go visit the trailer park where Holbrook is supposedly taking care of his sick father. Instead of finding Holbrook, though, all she finds is his perfectly healthy father and a teddy bear stuffed with animal guts inside of her car. Essentially this was just a PSA to stay in school, kids.

The next day Spencer and Caleb head to the school so they can put the knife in the giant furnace in the ceramics room. It’s a walk-in, so you know someone will be getting stuck inside of it. The lucky winner is Caleb since Spencer walked away because a window was open. No harm ends up coming to Caleb, though, and they are able to destroy the knife.

Grand opening

Emily, who was up all night making a mess and not food, wakes up early to get back to work. However, before she goes, Aria stops by and shows her the letter she wrote to Talmidge. It’s all about her relationship with Ezra and how she didn’t have a normal high school experience. Emily basically tells her that the letter is terrible, so Aria hurries over to the university to try to destroy the email. She gets there too late since Jackie has already read it, but the tables turn and we find out that Jackie is surprisingly cool about the entire thing. So much so that Aria gets accepted to Talmidge after all! It does come with a price, though, as Aria finds a passage of her letter printed on a bookmark at the store.

Back in the kitchen, Emily arrives to find that Ezra has hired a professional to cook the dinner. Emily is crushed and basically has a freak-out because now Paige won’t return her calls. We feel bad, but we have a feeling she won’t stay single for long. Speaking of freaking out, Toby shows up at the opening and confronts Spencer about the knife. He knows she took it and storms out. Maybe Emily and Paige aren’t the only couple on the rocks.

The episode ends on a very strange note, which is really saying something. Ashley invites Jason to dinner so they can look at a file together. Naturally this leads to a weird kiss between them and then leads to a slumber party.
