Pretty Little Liars continued to investigate Detective Wilden’s murder in season 4, episode 8 “The Guilty Girl’s Handbook” with a celebrity guest appearance and a surprising confession. What follows is a recap so beware of spoilers.

 

The episode begins with Emily’s mother frustrated and inquiring about the car that crashed into her house. It turns out it was a stolen car and that the police have no answers. The rest of the girls gather and theorize about why A would want to hurt Emily. Veronica lets Hanna know that her mother, Ashley, was not granted bail and will be moved to a facility farther away.

Hanna feels guilty that her mother is in jail due to A’s intervention and decides to stay home from school to figure out her life. Aria and Mike are home alone while their dad is off in Syracuse. Mike emphasizes the importance of bonding with his lacrosse team and reveals that he is now taking a martial arts class. Perhaps Jake is his teacher?

Ezra chats with Malcolm until Emily interrupts to get college counseling. Ezra follows his instincts and asks Emily if the Pretty Little Liars continue to be threatened, and she quickly changes the topic. Ezra points out that Emily had other extracurricular beyond swimming and that she should get a reference from her former supervisor, Zoey.

Caleb worries about Hanna while Spencer offers to cut class as Caleb probes to see how the Pretty Little Liars are truly doing. Caleb pulled a number from Nigel’s cell phone, but it was assigned to three New Yorkers. Toby headed up to New York to do some more investigating.

Ashley calls Hanna from jail and reassures her that everything is going to be alright. It does not seem like Hanna believes her though. Hanna enlists the help of Mona to help her confess to killing Detective Wilden in order to save her mom. Mona advises Hanna to make it seem like the evidence points turn her for Wilden’s murder.

In the Hastings’ home, Spencer encounters Veronica’s new intern Beckett, who treats the case like a game and lets Spencer helps comb through evidence. Aria checks in with Jake to see how Mike is doing, and he reveals that Mike has been targeted by his own team members. Jake offers Aria help without needing to be in a relationship with her. Do you like Jake?

Spencer visits Eddie back at Radley and brings him the report of Toby’s mother’s suicide. Eddie was interviewed by Wilden and reported that she was killed from the roof, not her window. Eddie advises Spencer to drop it before she gets any further.

Emily meets up with Zoey, who reminds Emily of how hopeless she seemed after Maya’s death. Zoey is heading to Nicaragua this summer and invites Emily along to join Habitat for Humanity once more. Emily’s mom interrupts the meeting to inform Emily that they will be out of their house for a couple of months.

Ashley meets with Caleb as she worries about what Hanna might do after desperation. As Mona continues to grill Hanna on all aspects of the murder, Pretty Little Liars flashbacks to alternate realities of the murder with Wilden antagonizing Hanna. Caleb comes across the two conspiring and is suspicious of their sudden friendship.

Beckett reminds Spencer that she is not as stealthy as she thinks as he calls her on the missing file. Aria gets spooked by an out-of-control car in her neighborhood, and when she tries to get ahold of Mike, she finds that his lacrosse buddies have incapacitated him. Worried of out of her mind, Aria calls Jake who rushes to her aid. Mike calls and lets Aria know that he’s fine, but will not be home that night. Jake and Aria hang out instead, having a semi-date night. The two even make plans to see a movie the following weekend.

Caleb stops Hanna before she can go to the police and lets her know that he spied on her and Mona. Caleb tries to convince her that she will not be fine in prison and that he thought her mom killed Wilden until he visited her today.

Emily comes home gushing about Habitat for Humanity as her mother seems stressed about the financial and house situation, bursting into tears. Spencer shows her mother the file on Toby’s mom, and she tries to get Spencer to leave Radley behind and help Toby move on.

In the final moments of the Pretty Little Liars’ episode, Veronica gets word that Mona has confessed. The girls are shown shocked as they head down to the Rosewood police station for more information. Do you think Mona really did it? What do you make of her smirk in the final scene?
