Pretty Little Liars answered some mysteries in its fourth episode, “Face Time,” while adding more pressure on the parents of the girls. What follows is a recap, so spoilers are aplenty.

Pretty Little Liars‘ “Face Time” opens with Mr. Fields reuniting with his family for a special visit regarding the allegations about Emily’s (Shay Mitchell) well-being. Emily’s family has been least-scene of the girls’ families in the series.

Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) relays the news about her dad’s missing gun to Hanna (Ashley Benson), and she predictably gets upset about him talking to her dad.

The new detectives, Office Holbrook (Sean Faris) and Lieutenant Tanner (Roma Maffia), are seen to be watching the Pretty Little Liars and getting series about the case.

Aria (Lucy Hale) and Jake (Ryan Guzman) seem to be doing “fine” although Aria exudes a definite lack of excitement about the relationship. Spencer’s (Troian Bellisario) mom (Lesley Fera) reprimands her about her jealousy towards Melissa (Torrey DeVitto), and she seems to take Spencer’s rejection from University of Pennsylvania harshly.

The detectives pick up Wilden’s (Bryce Johnson) belongings from the bank, serving to further spook Ashley (Laura Leighton) and Hanna. Spencer wants to get leverage on Melissa by possibly scaring her with the masks the girls found. Emily confronts her doctor about calling Family Services while he stands his ground and gives her more bad news as he tells her she has a torn rotator.

Hanna tries to lead Lieutenant Tanner into thinking badly of Wilden and Melissa, but she doesn’t fool anyone, and gets saved by Caleb. Toby goes off to Saratoga to search for his mother’s old physician, Dr. Palmer. Paige (Lindsey Shaw) comforts Emily after learning of her injury, and Aria has an awkward encounter with Malcolm (Teo Briones) outside a bookstore. Aria gives Jake the lowdown of her relationship with Ezra (Ian Harding), and he seems uncertain that Aria is truly done with him.

Ashley seems worried about her job and is trying to protect Hanna after Wilden’s death. Toby realizes that Dr. Palmer has dementia and that his assistance in solving his mother’s murder is limited. Aria and Spencer pull an A and spy on Melissa discovering the masks from outside the Hastings’ residence. Emily continues to try to evade her parents as they ask her about how she got hurt. Emily runs away after raised voices which can’t end well.

Caleb and Hanna theorize about her mother’s involvement in Wilden’s murder just in time for the detectives to stop by. The pair lie about her mother’s whereabouts while Spencer follows Melissa out of Hector’s house. Melissa dumps a bunch of masks while Aria has another disturbing conversation with Hector. Aria discovers more masks of Ali’s (Sasha Pieterse) face and Hector reveals that Ali was driven to his place by someone.

Spencer confronts Melissa, and she reveals that she was on the Halloween train and that Wilden tried to kill Spencer and all were afraid of him. Melissa also questions whether Ali is truly dead or if she is Red Coat. Wilden apparently was a puppet, not the puppet master, and Melissa claims that all of her efforts were to protect Spencer. Jenna and Shana were sent to protect Spencer while Melissa claims Wilden set the fire and that Red Coat was a different person. Melissa warns Spencer to let it go when she asks if she killed Wilden. What do you think?

Paige continues to reassure Emily about the future, taking her home only to find that the police have been called. A confirms that Melissa is not on the A team while Hanna confides to the other Pretty Little Liars about her mom.
