As announced by ABC Family President Michael Riley in a press release, ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars has been renewed for its fourth season. The series is the most popular ABC Family show and was consistently the number one show on cable television during its time period among target demographics.

The show was given a 24 episode order which will air mid-2013. This past season began in June and it is likely that the fourth season will begin in June as well. The first season received 22 episodes, the second season received 25 episodes, while the third season is currently in the middle of airing its 24 episodes. The show has been a boost for ABC Family with a bevy of awards from the People’s Choice Awards and the Teen Choice Awards.

As mentioned in the press release, the show has done particularly well across various social-media sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Get Glue. “The August 28th finale exploded social media sites across America, breaking the show’s own previous records, generating more than 709,000 tweets, peaking at an impressive 36,000 tweets per minute. Moreover, according to SocialGuide, “Pretty Little Liars became the #1 “most social” TV series episode in history, breaking records with over 1.6 million comments.”

The next episode of Pretty Little Liars will air on October 23 at 8 PM ET with a special Halloween themed episode. The Halloween episode will feature former American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert who will perform his songs “Trespassing” and “Cuckoo” and interact with Aria (Lucy Hale). The Halloween party takes place upon the Rosewood Ghost Train and looks to involve some drama with A. The show is currently busy writing and filming the rest of the third season, which should return in mid-January.

If you’re missing Pretty Little Liars, be sure to check out the webisode series “Pretty Dirty Secrets” on ABC Family.com. Although it does not feature the four female leads, it has introduced viewers to new characters and explored the backgrounds of Lucas (Brendan Robinson), Garrett (Yani Gellman), and Noel (Brant Daugherty).

In a recent Teen Vogue interview, Ashley Benson who plays Hanna Marin, revealed that the fourth season may be the last. “The producers are talking about doing four seasons,” she says, “and then wrapping it up with a feature film. We’d all want to go somewhere we’ve never been before.” By this she implies that the A drama would continue wherever the Pretty Little Liars go. “To be followed around by A in a whole other state or country could be really exciting. We would love to make it happen—not just for us but also for the fans.”
