Pretty Little Liars returned on Tuesday with a thrilling episode aboard the A Train in “This is a Dark Ride.” A full recap of the episode is below, so if you haven’t watched it, you are forewarned.

Pre-Train

The episode opened with Mona (Janel Parrish) singing “Teddy Bear’s Picnic” while painting a paper mache head and remarking on her love of Halloween to a mysterious black hoodie figure. This scene sets the ominous tone for the episode, especially with the pills that she hands off. Could she be talking to Toby (Keegan Allen)?

The Pretty Little Liars foursome, Hanna (Ashley Benson), Emily (Shay Mitchell), Spencer (Troian Bellisario), and Aria (Lucy Hale) are excited for the Halloween train and have kept their costumes a secret from one another. As they discuss Caleb’s (Tyler Blackburn) recovery, they stumble upon a neighbor’s house decked out for Halloween with a RIP Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) sign. Do you all agree that this takes tasteless to the next level?

Spencer comes home to find newly-freed Garrett (Yani Gellman) in her house. As seen in the clip posted a few days ago, Toby interrupts their conversation, forcing Garrett to leave just as he’s about to tell Spencer something, and the couple have a cute moment. What could Garrett have to stay to Spencer? Do you think Toby is up to something?

Cue a make-out scene between Caleb and Hanna who are still hiding their relationship. Caleb works in a dentist’s office. Is Caleb on the straight-and-narrow now?

Ezra (Ian Harding) cancels on Aria due to an offer to ghostwrite a novel. Poor Ezria fans. At least he’s moving on in his career. Their potential make-out session get interrupted by trick-or-treaters who apparently go to apartments.

Marin House

Pastor Ted (Edward Kerr) and Ashley Marin (Laura Leighton) are all dressed up as a doctor and a sexy nurse, playing host to trick-or-treaters. Ashley encounters a kid in her kitchen despite not having any more candy. The kid in a nightgown rejects the idea that scary things can be fun. This show proves this. In the tradition of creepy Halloween movies, Ashley finds the little blonde girl that Ted cannot see in Hanna’s room. The little girl says she can’t go home. However, when Ashley tries to comfort her, she discovers her hands are really cold. Warning signs abound. Of course Pastor Ted can’t see her. Is Ashley going crazy or is someone messing with her?

Back at the Marin residence, Ashley and Pastor Ted discuss the mysterious little girl who may or may not be a ghost.

Train

Now on the train, Hanna shows her Marilyn attitude with Lucas (Brendan Robinson) when he predictably takes her photo. Aria is classy as Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby. Noel (Brant Daugherty) and Jenna (Tammin Sursok) looking to be pirates show up on the train despite Noel’s tradition of infamous Halloween parties. All aboard! This train is getting full.

Hanna and Aria share a look with an eerie creepy doll signaling bad things to come for the Liars.

Spencer and Toby show up looking as classy as ever while Noel freaks everyone out with a fake choking attempt. Emily and Paige (Lindsey Shaw) enter looking cute while Jason (Drew Van Acker) also boards. Is Jason the only non-high school person in attendance?

Adam Lambert performs “Cuckoo” in style, looking like a classy Dracula with his spectacular tunes as well. It’s nice to see the girls having fun after the past events. Did you enjoy Lambert’s performance? Meanwhile, Hanna is approached by a spooky-looking person in a faceless mask.

Jason confronts Spencer about Garrett, but leaves the conversation when he sees Lucas sneak out. Adam Lambert is rocking this episode. Can we have him in every episode?

It turns out the masked man who was bugging Hanna is just Caleb. Cue another adorable make-out session.

Aria gets to bond with Adam Lambert (which the rest of the world wishes they could do) who worries that she looks lonely. She is too caught up in her loneliness to notice that someone in a joker mask slipped something into her drink, as was previewed in a previously released clip. Trouble seems to accompany her everywhere she goes.

Paige and Emily share a cute moment that is predictably watched by a mysterious figure. Spencer walks down a hallway alone (hasn’t she seen horror films?) and is kidnapped by the figure in the blank doll-like mask while hearing the same tune Mona was humming earlier.

Garrett is the mysterious figure. He tells Spencer what happened the night Alison died with a flashback scene. Garrett and Jenna went outside while Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) and Ian (Ryan Merriman) stayed in Alison’s room. Alison finds them outside and taunts Jenna, pushing her down. Garrett simulates striking Alison in order to make Jenna think she died. Garrett went back and saw Alison talking to Aria’s dad Byron Montgomery (Chad Lowe) about presumably her blackmail about his affair. We had previously ruled out the parents’ involvement but oh no! Do you think Byron killed Alison? Do you think he was referring to her blackmail or something else?

Spencer leaves to get Aria while Garrett promises to stay. Aria’s purse is found in her seat, with a A on the window, and an ominous text from A. Aria is trapped and duct taped in the cargo area while the girls search for her. As Hanna eloquently states in our favorite line of the night, “You can get a varsity letter messing with us.”

Hanna makes a mistake and tells about Aria’s disappearance to a creepy plastic look-a-like. Who could this be?

Spencer is grabbed by the neck by the ominous joker figure and is almost pushed out of the train when she escapes. A fight scene ensues when Paige tries to rescue her and the joker gets away leaving a fake red nail. So is all now forgiven between Spencer and Paige given the mid-summer finale?

Still stuck in a cargo box, Aria gets the duct tape off her mouth just as Garrett’s body falls on her. Using her newly found vocal talents, she accordingly screams. The spoiler that someone was going to die was released earlier this month. Did you sense that Garrett was going to die?

Jenna is as snarky as ever when asked by Paige if she knows where Aria is and in her previous interaction with Toby.

Two voices, one male and one female, are heard by Aria as her captors try to push her cargo box off of the train. She stabs one of them in the hand while the rest of the Pretty Little Liars girls find her just in time. We don’t think Aria is going to want to be in any enclosed spaces for a while after this.

Once again the girls have to face the police with the death of Garrett. Toby comforts Spencer in a nice moment but did anyone else notice that Toby was barely in this episode? This seems suspicious.

Ezra shows up after hearing what happened to Aria, and Jason reappears. Noel taunts the girls when Toby stands up for them and pushes Noel. A body in a funeral bag is revealed as Noel crashes into an ice box. Do you think this is Alison’s body?

The mask of Hanna’s actual creepy stalker is revealed on Mona’s floor. So we know Mona was there and still is obsessed with Hanna. The credits start to roll as a hand rises from the dirt. What did you think of the ending?
