Pretty Little Liars returned Tuesday with a jaw-dropping episode, “She’s Better Now,” with shocking revelations and leads for the rest of the third season. What follows is a recap, so naturally spoilers are included from this episode.

To start off the mid-season premiere, Mona (Janel Parrish) appeared at Hanna’s (Ashley Benson) bedside as Hypable previously revealed. After saying that Wren (Julian Morris) told her Hanna was her guardian angel, Mona tries to convince Hanna that she’s changed. Their conversation is halted when Hanna’s grandmother (Betty Buckley) checks up on her. Why do you think she’s there?

A figure we assumed to be Toby (Keegan Allen) skateboarded through the town as he was chased by a black vehicle. However, Toby was revealed to be behind the wheel. Who was he chasing?

Meanwhile, Emily’s father (Eric Steinberg) has a new alarm system installed and is supporting Garrett’s (Yani Gellman) mother in her case against the police department. Remember that Garrett died during the Halloween episode “This is a Dark Ride.” He pulls the protective parent card and tells Emily that she can’t do her marathon run.

Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Aria (Lucy Hale) are upset to learn that Mona is returning to Rosewood High. Spencer thinks Mona could know more about the N.A.T. club, while Aria still has not talked to her dad about the story Garrett revealed.

Hanna’s grandma believes in the power of rehabilitation, telling her a quirky family story. Hanna reluctantly heads to school.

As previewed by Hypable earlier today, Aria has a spat with the rest of the girls over her dad’s (Chad Lowe) innocence and then has to face Mona for a great start to her day. Aria has still not revealed the truth to Ezra (Ian Harding) and to top it off has Meredith for her American History class. Meredith (Amanda Schull) took Aria’s phone. Wonder if she’ll get any A texts in the meantime?

Mona opens her locker to find a cow’s brain spiked with a knife as Rosewood High documents it and Lucas (Brendan Robinson) looks on in horror. Lucas escapes, limping from the scene, but not before Mona whispers something suspicious to him. Apparently they have cow brains in high school dissection classes now. Emily and Aria feel sorry for Mona as Spencer disapproves. Mona believes that she has helped the girls as she gave clues about who killed Maya (Bianca Lawson). She knows she needs to earn their trust saying, “I’m better now.”

Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) and Hanna agree to be more on the radar with their relationship as Emily discovers that Harold (Travis Richey), the concierge for the Lost Hills Resort, is now a janitor at Rosewood High. Why was Mona talking to him?

Toby and Spencer experience some tension in their relationship as she still won’t let go of the train ride. Hanna and Emily play detective and investigate the janitor while Aria plays guilty, hanging out with Ezra. Spencer confronts Jason (Drew Van Acker) after a run with Toby where fans got to see a prolonged period of Toby shirtless. Jason believes that Mona deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Caleb proves himself deserving of the best boyfriend card after hacking into the school’s system to find that Mona pressured her parents to come back in. Hanna puts the onus on Aria to tell Ezra rather than give all the power to A. As previously seen in a clip, Toby and Spencer get some much deserved hot tub time.

Byron and Aria discuss Meredith as well as Byron’s lack of connection to Allison (Sasha Pieterse). His stares and hesitance in giving his answers can be qualified as creepy. After seeing Mona’s online video, Grams takes back her previous forgiveness statement and thinks Mona is fake. Lucas drops by Hanna to give Caleb money he owed, and Hanna takes the time to interrogate him. Lucas reveals that Mona snuck out of Radley while she was institutionalized.

So Grams’ purpose in “She’s Better Now” is revealed as she sings the national anthem at the marathon. Emily is under house arrest but using her thrifty skills, she escapes using her dad’s phone. The girls decide to meet at the school to investigate Harold. Hanna tells the others that she thinks Mona was on the Halloween train.

Spencer gives Nancy Drew-esque advice as they break into Harold’s office and discover Ali’s diary. Cue flashback scene of Ali blackmailing Byron in his office. Byron seems to have already paid Ali, yet she is demanding more. Does anyone like Ali anymore? Harold catches them and seems to have recognized Toby. Another member of the A Team? They come out of the school just in time to see a fire break out with Meredith inside. Guess Jenna (Tammin Sursok) was lucky in transferring.

Do you think Toby or Mona set that fire? Do you think Mona was the hooded figure in the beginning of the episode?

Byron takes Meredith’s side and suspects Aria of setting the fire, criticizing her fans. He’s not winning any Dad of the Year awards soon. After calling Spencer with the news, fans see Byron eavesdropping on her conversation while Mona treats Jason’s burns. So is Jason now a member of the A Team?

What were your favorite moments of the episode? Who had the worst time of it in “She’s Better Now”?
