HBO Max announced it has made a pilot order for a one-hour drama that is a prequel to the 1998 movie Practical Magic, called Rules of Magic.

The HBO streamer is working overtime to build up its original programming and has announced that it has ordered a series called Rules of Magic. The one-hour drama is set to be a prequel to Practical Magic.

While Practical Magic was a movie that came out in 1998 starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, the film was based on a book of the same name by Alice Hoffman. As Variety reports, Rules of Magic, also a novel by Hoffman, is set in New York City in the 1960s.

The Practical Magic prequel will follow three siblings named Franny, Jet, and Vincent Owens who have supernatural “abnormalities” that they work to hide from the general public. However, the siblings will soon find out they are descendant from a bloodline of witches, and their “abnormalities” are much more than mere quirks they must keep hidden.

So how does Rules of Magic tie into Practical Magic? Ultimately, Franny and Jet will become the aunts played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest in the 1998 film. Vincent, however, will go on to build a surprising legacy.

Rules of Magic sounds like an incredibly exciting prequel and a really fun dive into the lore behind Practical Magic. However, the pilot also has a pretty exciting team behind the camera to make the story really shine.

Jessica Jones creator Melissa Rosenberg is slated to write and produce through Tall Girls Productions. This will be her first project in her extensive, new contract with WBTV. Dana Baratta will also write and produce.

HBO Max is reportedly setting up a writer’s room for Rules of Magic with a 10-episode order. There is no word yet on casting choices, or if there will be any flashes forward that feature any of the cast of the 1998 movie.

Regardless, the announcement of Rules of Magic has got us incredibly excited. If nothing else, it’s a great reason to re-watch Practical Magic this Halloween season.
