A new piece of writing by J.K. Rowling about Order of the Phoenix villain Dolores Umbridge will be released on Pottermore next week.

The announcement comes on the heels of teases Pottermore has been releasing which appear to suggest that Order of the Phoenix will debut on the website on October 31 (Halloween).

According to a press release, the new writing on Umbridge is “a rich, 1,500-word back story about Umbridge’s life filled with many new details, as well as Rowling’s revealing first-person thoughts and reflections about the character.”

Umbridge, as you will recall, is one of Harry’s biggest enemies in the fifth Harry Potter. Her worst moment must’ve been when she brought Harry into detention and forced him to painfully carve “I must not tell lies” on his own hand repeatedly.

Don’t be fooled by headlines out there that are billing this as a new Harry Potter “story.” While this new material on Umbridge is sure to be an interesting read, we expect that this will look like the numerous character profiles Rowling has already released on Pottermore. Expect things like details about Umbridge’s early life and how she found her way into the Ministry of Magic. (Dear Jo: It’s time to out one of your characters again. Can you please reveal that Umbridge is a lesbian?)

The media is obsessed with writing “new Harry Potter story”-type headlines because they’re very click-able, as recent articles have proven. It’s aggravating because we can’t figure out if these sites are just clueless or they’re trying to trick readers. It’s probably a mix of both. Let’s all just agree to stop with those.

We applaud Pottermore for announcing Umbridge’s story in advance. They must’ve noticed that the media loves to hype up their readers about anything that falls out of Rowling’s mouth.

We’ll be sure to share highlights from Umbridge’s story – and the other goods that are found in Pottermore’s Order of the Phoenix area – when they debut on October 31.
