The final book in the Harry Potter series has debuted on Pottermore with a few new pieces of writing from author J.K. Rowling.

Pottermore’s Deathly Hallows section includes 15 moments for the final Harry Potter book’s 37 chapters. Within those 15 moments, 5 of them have new writing from Rowling.

The author’s new writings include thoughts on the Dursley’s and their final moments in the series. “I wanted to suggest, in the final book, that something decent (a long-forgotten but dimly burning love of her sister; the realisation that she might never see Lily’s eyes again) almost struggled out of Aunt Petunia when she said goodbye to Harry for the last time, but that she is not able to admit to it, or show those long-buried feelings,” Rowling wrote.

Responding to some criticism from readers, the author added, “Although some readers wanted more from Aunt Petunia during this farewell, I still think that I have her behave in a way that is most consistent with her thoughts and feelings throughout the previous seven books.”

Elsewhere in her new writing, Rowling shares thoughts on Extension Charms, the Sword of Gryffindor (in which she talks about the object’s ownership as well as its parallels to King Arthur and Excalibur), alchemy, and the concept of the Hatstall (when the Sorting Hat takes a long time to sort someone).

Overall, the release of Deathly Hallows feels underwhelming. The final book could have received some of the most interesting writing from Rowling, but instead there were a bunch of strange decisions: The presence of the Hatstall information in Chapter 36 — the penultimate chapter of the book — doesn’t relate to the chapter at all. In another strange twist, there isn’t a moment (or artwork) for the epilogue.

This simply seems like a missed opportunity. For example, we would’ve loved to read more about Dobby or any of the other characters who died.

We reached out to Pottermore to confirm that this is everything the site will be offering in relation to Deathly Hallows and we’re still awaiting a response.

Update: Pottermore tells Hypable “more original content [is coming to the site] in the coming months” but this is all that they’ll be releasing for Deathly Hallows.

In a blog post announcing changes to the site this past April, Pottermore said that there will be more to come on the site even after the release of Deathly Hallows. One of those things is probably a Patronus test which Rowling has said she’s written for the site.

“[Deathly Hallows is] certainly not the end,” Pottermore said, “in fact, far from it.”
