Harry Potter veterans Dame Maggie Smith and Sir Michael Gambon (who played McGonagall and Dumbledore respectively) will star in Quartet, Dustin Hoffman’s first foray into directing.

The film, which was written by Ronald Harwood (The Pianist) will also star Billy Connolley, Pauline Collins and Tom Courtenay. Quartet is a British comedy film set in a retirement home for former Opera singers. Oscar-winning actor Hoffman will direct the movie for BBC Films and the Weinstein Co.

“[We] decided to give an up-and-coming first-timer a chance,” joked studio chairman Harvey Weinstein in a press release posted by The Hollywood Reporter. “We’re excited to be working with Dustin on his directorial debut.”

There has been no word yet on who Gambon and Smith will play in the production, or indeed when it will be released. However, Hypable will be sure to keep you updated on any developments.

Are you excited to see the duo return? Do you think Hoffman will make a good director?
