Episode #20 – The Crimson Horror

Hosted by Laura Byrne Cristiano, Natalie Fisher

May 5, 2013

Our show is dedicated to in-depth discussion about the Doctor Who universe: show and cast commentary, filming locations, rumors, tie-in video games/other products, spin-off series and more.

Hypable’s regular Doctor Who writer, Laura Byrne-Cristiano leads the discussion Natalie Fisher, and Kyle Herzallah joining in.

-We start off by giving our instant thumbs up, down, or sideways reaction to the episode. It’s a thumbs up for Laura and Kyle and a thumbs sideways for Natalie.  We also loved the quotes. Natalie was keen on everything Strax said and Laura loved the bit with the sonic and the chair. Laura also has a bit of a fangasm with the Tegan references.

Kyle (AKA Tariq who is now going by his middle name officially) recorded a reaction since he couldn’t be on the podcast.

-Next we get into the specifics of the episode

    • We really like how Mark Gatiss set the story in Yorkshire in the Victorian era. Visually it was really well done, and hit just the right scare factor for the kids. The humor was fantastic.
    • We especially thought guest stars Diana Rigg and Rachael Sterling brought the story to another level. Especially Diana Rigg was realistically scary and Rachael Sterling was heartbreaking.
    • Strax, Vastra, and Jenny need their own spin-off series. We talk how that could work. They also need to make Ada a part of their gang. We also liked that Jenny really had the chance to shine as a character not under the shadow of Vastra this time.
    • We loved the Yorkshire humor, even though we are pretty sure it sailed right over the heads of most Americans
    • Red and roses once again
    • The theme of perfection. We liked it. Not typical ground for Doctor Who, but we thought they incorporated it well without being too preachy.
    • What we thought of the alien: EWWWWWWWWW! (in a good way)
    • So Vastra, Jenny, and Strax get no Clara explanation at all? Really? And why was he taking her to their time period in London to begin with? Surely he intended for her to meet them and to explain.
    • The end (we are a little confused)
      • So the kids dug up the photos. Who the hell was taking pictures?
      • What made the kids hunt for the photos, that’s a pretty random thing to do.
      • She’s passing the Doctor off as her boyfriend.
      • Is the Great Intelligence at work here?
      • This is blackmail how exactly?
      • Willingly risking the lives of kids one of whom is not a teen? Parallels to Sarah Jane and Luke. Would the Doctor and Clara really do that considering how often things don’t go as planned.
  • News
    • Changing producers. What is up with that already?
    • 50th anniversary no Doctors again, now it’s confirmed
  • Spoilers
    • Info on locations for the 50th anniversary and potential returning characters
  • Mailbag covering BBC America specials and Clara super powers
  • Special Announcements
