Tuesday marked the summer finale of Pretty Little Liars. Following in the steps of its predecessor Desperate Housewives, each season has revolved around a mystery and ended with revelations and cliffhangers. Apart from simply fleshing out this season’s mysteries, this finale sought to surprise and shock its fans.

Executive producer Marlene King has even been posting instigators on Twitter such as: “Are we ready to have our minds blown?” and “The PLL crew pulled off the impossible: A true shocker in the digital, spoiler-heavy age.”

ABC Family posted a survey on its home site for the series asking viewers, “What was the most shocking moment from the summer finale?” It gives the options: 1) Mona walking out of Radley, 2) Nate killed Maya, 3) Caleb getting shot, 4) Toby is the betrAyer.

My question to the fans is this: were any of these things truly shocking?

Don’t get me wrong, there was certainly drama and an amazing climax. However, I am going to blame foreshadowing for leaving me entertained, yet unsurprised.

Let’s start with the first “shocker” of the finale, Mona walking out of Radley. While exciting, was this truly surprising? For the event that our Pretty Little Liars truly believed to be the end of their confrontations with A, did we really think for a second that Mona was going to sit back and simply hear about it from the rest of her team? It’s not in Mona’s character to sit idly by without acting. However, there is the fact that she is in a monitored inpatient facility. Nevertheless, previous episodes have shown the security of Radley to be less than ideal. Hannah and Aria were both able to sneak in and Mona has been able to sneak out of her room, not being accounted for by the staff in episode seven of season 3 titled, “Crazy.” It was great to have Mona’s presence in the episode, but I was left satisfied, not shocked.

The second revelation (going in chronological order) was learning that Nate killed Maya. I can’t honestly say that I saw this coming, but there were certainly clues that kept it from being “mind blowing.” He’s a new character that we are unsure of. Nate seems to go out of his way to be around and involved in Emily’s life, even though he is in college and would seemingly have family that could also grieve with him, were he truly Maya’s cousin. We’ve seen him exhibit irrational rage in episode five of season 3 titled “That Girl is Poison.” It also doesn’t make sense that Nate would want to spend the weekend with Emily, without ulterior motives, after they kissed and Emily explained that she doesn’t have feelings for him. The icing on the cake was how worried Emily’s mother was about her going away for the weekend with Nate. It definitely foreshadowed sinister things going down in the woods.

Perhaps the least surprising event of the finale was Caleb getting shot. Using the Tarantino format and showing the end of the episode first and then working back up to it, it was fairly obvious that something had happened to Caleb. We see ambulances, shocked PLL’s and an inconsolable, sobbing Hannah. This is followed later in the episode with a big Haleb fight over bringing a gun to confront “A,” with Caleb sneaking the gun into his bag regardless. This ended the question of what happened to Caleb in my mind. If there was any doubt though, director Ron Lagomarsino does a close-up on Caleb setting the gun down within Nate’s reach before embracing Emily, letting the audience know what was about to happen next.

Now for the final “surprise” of the finale: Toby is the betrAyer. Toby has been M.I.A. for quite a while “on a job” before the finale occurs. We learn in season 1 that Toby has reasons to hate Ali, and these are never truly resolved. We also see Toby defend Mona in episode six of season 2, “Never Letting Go.” Also, if Spencer is in trouble and Toby is “right where he needs to be,” where is he going? However, perhaps most poetic of all was having Spencer sleep with Toby. The romance seemed too perfect and the moment it happened, all I could think was that it would be all too poetic for him to then betrAy her trust. Yet, even with all that being said, I have a hunch that Toby is just posing as a member of the “A” team. Before disappearing after episode eight of season 3 (“Stolen Kisses”) he states that he is going to find out things for himself. What better way to find out what’s going on then to infiltrate the enemy camp? There are just too many possible reasons for Toby to dawn a black hoodie.

While un-shocked, this fast-paced, exciting finale left me satiated and excited for next season. What do you think? Were you shocked, satiated, or both?
