The time has come where PlayStation cross-play will be allowed for many third-party games, with the battle royale game Fortnite taking the lead.

In today’s blog post, Sony announced the Fortnite open beta for PlayStation cross-play. “Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content.”

Describing more in detail how the PlayStation cross-play open beta would work, Sony had the following to say: “The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems.”

Kotaku reports that Psyonix, the company behind Rocket League, is “really happy for the PlayStation and Fortnite communities and think that this is a great step forward. We know that Rocket League players and our own community want to know what this means for them as well, but we don’t have any updates at the moment.”

Perhaps if the data and overall fan reception of the PlayStation cross-play going live on Fortnite today goes well, Sony will then consider adding other third-party games into their cross-play enabled roster.

Sony recently announced the PlayStation Classic, which releases Dec. 3 and will retail for $99.99. With it are 20 included digital games, with only five out of the full 20 having been announced. Sony also celebrated their 5 millionth PlayStation console sale with a limited production translucent blue PS4 Pro and matching periphery, which hit stores on Aug. 24, 2018.
