Console releases are all about pre-release hype, and Sony figured that they’d get ahead of the game by posting an official unboxing video for the PlayStation 4 ahead of its North American release later this week.

The PlayStation 4 unboxing video perhaps needs to be seen to be believed. It’s a 90-second clip of dramatic lighting, electronic music and a figure with gloved hands showing off the contents of the box. The man is eventually revealed to be Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida.

As shown in the video above, the PlayStation 4 box contains a network voucher, a quick-start guide, an AC power cord, a headset, a USB cable, an HDMI cable, a Dualshock 4 controller and the console itself.

Looks familiar, doesn’t it? The clip is essentially a direct copy of Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories unboxing video (Daft Punk’s record label is Columbia, owned by Sony, so we can’t really blame them).

The PlayStation 4 releases in North America on November 15 and in Europe and Australia on November 29.

Microsoft’s Xbox One launches in both Europe and North America on November 22.

Hypable will be covering both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launches in depth over the coming weeks. We’d love to hear from you – will you be buying one or both of the consoles? What are you hoping for from the next console generation?
