Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ director Matt Reeves has signed on for a third Planet of the Apes movie.

After 20th Century Fox began screening director Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘ latest cut, the studio decided to go ahead and get Matt Reeves signed on for the third installment of the Planet of the Apes franchise.

Deadline reports that Matt Reeves will direct, while he and Mark Bomback will be penning the third film’s script.

Bomback wrote the script for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which went on to pull in nearly $500 million worldwide and garnered positive critical acclaim.

It’s reported that Reeves will “go right into the third film, a priority for the studio.” He’ll be putting his final touches on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and once the sequel is released on July 18, he’ll begin filming the third Planet of the Apes film.

The first trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was very interesting and fans were excited to see Caesar as he evolves into a leader against what’s left of the human race.

Matt Reeves has also directed Cloverfield, another unexpected hit, and we’re happy to see some continuity between the next Planet of the Apes films.

Andy Serkis has returned in the lead role of Caesar, and the film has a cast that is as equally impressive as the first, even though it features very few of the same characters. Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, Judy Greer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Toby Kebbell will join the cast this time around.

The film’s release date is set for July 29, 2016.
