Nearly two months after the Pitch Perfect sequel opened in theaters, Universal is now moving forward with Pitch Perfect 3.

The studio is in talks with Kay Cannon, who wrote the first two films, to write the third installment of the a cappella series, according to THR. There’s currently no word on whether or not Pitch Perfect 2 helmer Elizabeth Banks will return to direct the threequel.

A big part of the deal will be securing series stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson for the new movie. The ladies reportedly received “about” $2 million each for their Pitch Perfect 2 roles, so the threequel will have to match or beat that amount.

The Pitch Perfect series has become a massive hit for Universal. The first movie made $65 million when it opened in 2012, while the sequel has made a whopping $161 million (so far).

There was a three year gap in between the first two Pitch Perfect movies, but presumably Universal will want to move faster on the third. Without the need for (many) special effects, the turn around on these films could be significantly faster.

While the reviews for the sequel were mixed, Pitch Perfect 2 was a very fun movie. With that said, one aspect it lacked when compared to the original is a break out musical hit that would receive radio play (the original film featured “Cups”).

It’ll be interesting to see how the plot of the series moves forward, as the sequel found the ladies graduating from Barden University. Whatever they do, it’ll surely involve their love for the art of a cappella. And it’ll surely include a lot of Fat Amy, the indisputable favorite in the series.

What would you like to see in ‘Pitch Perfect 3’?

We expect to see a larger role for Hailee Steinfeld, who came in to Pitch Perfect 2 as a potential Anna Kendrick replacement should the latter not want to return for a third movie.
