Margot Robbie will once again team up with her Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson to bring a female-fronted Pirates of the Caribbean film to life!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, who first reported the exclusive news, this Pirates of the Caribbean project will be separate from the previously announced franchise reboot that’s currently being developed by long-time Pirates screenwriter Ted Elliott and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin.

Though plot details are being kept under wraps for now, the project, which is reportedly in early development, is not intended to be a spinoff of the long-running Pirates of the Caribbean franchise which had pirate Jack Sparrow at its center.

Rather, this new film will be a completely original story with new characters that are inspired by the world of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which itself inspired by the long-running and popular ride at Disneyland.

Longtime Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer is attached to produce both the Elliot/Mazin project and this new Robbie/Hodson project.

This will be the third large franchise that writer Christina Hodson has written for, as she has previously penned the script for the Transformers film Bumblebee and the (semi) Suicide Squad sequel Birds of Prey — which starred Margot Robbie.

Disney’s first installment of the Pirates franchise premiered in theaters back in July of 2003. Since then, the studio has churned out five Pirates of the Caribbean movies in total. Collectively, the franchise has pulled in over $4.5 billion at the box office.

However, that original franchise — headlined by Johnny Depp — saw diminishing returns as it went on, with 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales, coming in with the second lowest box office of the series — $795 million worldwide on an estimated $250 million budget. That brought it just ahead of original film, Curse of the Black Pearl, which grossed $654.3 million on a $140 million budget.
