It’s official: Pirates of the Caribbean 5 has cast Kaya Scodelario as its female lead.

After much speculation, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed on Twitter that Kaya Scodelario will appear in Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales:

Scodelario (22), who is also gearing up for the Maze Runner sequel The Scorch Trials, will be acting opposite Johnny Depp (Jack Sparrow) in Pirates 5. Both Geoffrey Rush (Barbossa) and Jack Davenport (James Norrington) are also rumored to return.

Last we heard, Javier Bardem will be playing the movie’s villain: “a ghost captain who blames Sparrow for the death of his brother and is searching for a supernatural object to aid him in revenge.”

Meanwhile Brenton Thwaites will be playing Henry, young British soldier who looks suspiciously like Will Turner (Orlando Bloom, who is reportedly “in talks” to return as Will-turned-Davey-Jones).

It is very likely that Henry is, in fact, the son of Will and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley, who is not returning), especially since Bloom has said that the producers are looking to, “Do something with me and the relationship with my son.”

And from there, it’s not a far stretch to imagine that Thwaites and Scodelario’s characters, due to their proximity in age, will be the main players in the next Pirates love story.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be helmed by the Norwegian director team Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. The crew is currently preparing to start filming in Australia, with the movie set for a July 2017 release.
