Speaking to Hypable at a signing to celebrate the DVD/Blu-ray release of The Perks of Being a Wallflower at Barnes & Noble in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, author and director Stephen Chbosky revealed he has indeed taken a meeting to direct John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars movie.

We posed the question to Chbosky after noticing a tweet this past November where he said he had met Scott Neustadter, who happens to have written the screenplay for The Fault In Our Stars.

Chbosky told us that even though he did have a meeting, he ultimately decided against directing the film.

The Fault In Our Stars is terrific, I did meet on that particular movie but that one I won’t be doing,” he told us.

“I know the movie they want to make of [the book] – I think it’s a terrific movie, but going back to the high school world so soon [following Perks] – it’s not high school, not exactly, but going back to that world – it just feels a little close to me.”

Chbosky would’ve been more interested in the project if filming was not commencing this year or next.

The critical and fan reception to The Perks of Being a Wallflower last year led many, Hypable writers included, to hope Chbosky would be under consideration. Read our reasons why.

Last year we drew up original pieces analyzing which movie stars should play August and Hazel. Read our picks at the links below, including one that was endorsed by John Green himself.

We will have more to share from our interview with Chbosky later today, in which he talks to us about what’s next for him, why the poem scene wasn’t included in the film, and more.
