Penny Dreadful: City of Angels fans hoping for more episodes of the series won’t be having their wishes granted by Showtime.

According to Deadline, Showtime has opted to cancel Penny Dreadful: City of Angels after just one season.

The premium cable network made the announcement via a statement in which they thanked executive producers John Logan, Michael Aguilar, and the entire cast and crew “for their astounding work” on the series.

Starring Nathan Lane, Natalie Dormer (em>Game of Thrones), Daniel Zovatto (Lady Bird), Kerry Bishe (Argo) Rory Kinnear (No Time To Die), Adriana Barraza (Drag Me To Hell), Michael Gladis (Mad Men), Jessica Garza (The Purge series), and Jonathan Nieves (Grey’s Anatomy), the now cancelled series served as a spinoff to Penny Dreadful, which ran for three seasons from 2014 through 2016.

Set 50 years after the original series, City of Angels takes place in 1938 Los Angeles muring the golden age of Hollywood. The show drew inspiration from Mexican-American folklore for the plot, which revolves around the diety Santa Muerte.

The series follows along as Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his partner, Detective Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) find themselves investigating a terrible murder, only to find themselves mixed up in something much greater.

The series also touched on the rich history of Los Angeles, in addition to delving into racial tensions of the time.
