Paul McCartney is heading to Broadway! The Beatles frontman is adapting the holiday classic It’s a Wonderful Life into a musical.

Paul McCartney is an incredibly talented musician and composer, but his latest endeavor is a pretty tall order, even for him. He’s turning It’s a Wonderful Life into a Broadway musical. While it’s exciting to see him branch out into musicals, adapting one of the most well-known holiday movies into a musical is going to have some crazy high expectations attached to it.

Still, if there’s anyone who is up to the task it has to be Paul McCartney, right? As Variety reports, McCartney is pretty far along in developing the film into a musical and hopes to have the production ready for the stage in London late 2020.

As McCartney said in a comment to the Associated Press, he never really intended to get into adapting musicals, but he just couldn’t resist this project, “Writing a musical is not something that had ever really appealed to me. But [producer] Bill [Kenwright] and I met up with Lee Hall and had a chat and I found myself thinking this could be interesting and fun. It’s a Wonderful Life is a universal story we can all relate to.”

While there are several moments in the original film that are pretty big bummers, the overall message of the movie is absolutely one we can all relate to. Ultimately, It’s a Wonderful Life teaches the importance of caring for others, family, friends, and that the world is a better place with you in it. And putting that message to music is only going to bring that message more poignancy.

Variety reports that McCartney has written 10 songs for the musical, and Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post told Variety he has already listened to the songs. According to his report, they “sound like a bona fide lost Beatles album, with one spectacular number’s rousing ending bringing to mind the ‘Na Na Na Na Na’s of ‘Hey Jude’.”

We can’t wait to see McCartney’s take on It’s a Wonderful Life and add it to our annual holiday festivities. The musical is intended to hit Broadway after its 2020 premiere in London.
