Paul Feig is already beginning to look beyond Ghostbusters, and reveals plans to bring back Melissa McCarthy and Jason Statham for a Spy sequel.

Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy’s fruitful partnership kicked off with Bridesmaids in 2011. After reuniting for the lukewarm The Heat in 2011, the pair made pure magic together in 2013 with Spy.

Spy is, without a doubt, one of the absolute highlights of Melissa McCarthy’s career. Written and directed by Feig, the movie follows McCarthy’s Susan Cooper, a CIA analyst who’s thrust into the field, takes to save her crush Bradley Fine (Jude Law) with the aid of her best friend Nancy (Miranda Hart). Rose Byrne stars as supervillain Rayna, with Jason Statham as McCarthy’s spy rival Rick Ford.

We’re therefore very excited to hear that Paul Feig is planning to return to the hilarious world of Spy for a sequel! Speaking to Empire, Feig says, “That’s another world that I don’t want to walk away from. It’s the first thing I did that I set up to be a possible franchise and Melissa is dying to do it.”

Feig further teases that he’s got a story planned already, “and a funny idea that will kick it off that involves Statham.”

The Ghostbusters director goes on to express enthusiasm for both McCarthy and Statham’s characters, saying, “Susan Cooper is one of my favourite characters I’ve ever come up with, but Rick Ford is possibly the one I’ll take to the grave with me. Will he get any more self-aware in the sequel? No, god no. He’ll get less self-aware.”

We can’t wait! But first, Ghostbusters, which also stars Melissa McCarthy, along with Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Kristen Wiig. The comedy debuts July 15.
