Freeform is officially moving forward with a remake of popular ’90s family drama Party of Five!

Earlier this year we learned that Freeform was working on bringing viewers an updated version of hit ’90s television drama Party of Five. Now, the network has confirmed that they’ve officially given the series a green light.

In a press release sent out on Thursday (September 6), Freeform announced that they’ve given a pilot order to a rebooted version of Party of Five from Sony Pictures Television.

The cool thing about the new series is that the network will be working with original series creators Christopher Keyser and Amy Lippman to bring the updated version to life.

The original series, which ruled the airwaves over two decades ago focused on a group of five siblings who suddenly found themselves orphaned after their parents lost their lives in a drunk driving accident.

This time around, the series will focus on a new family — the Buenidas — wherein the five siblings must figure out how to survive after their parents get deported to Mexico.

The new premise is especially timely given the stories coming out of the news centered around children and parents being forcibly separated from each other while trying to cross over the border.

As part of the press release, executive producers Lippman and Keyser issued a joint statement about how they’re looking forward to keeping the spirit of the original series alive with the newest iteration of the story.

“25 years ago, we imagined a story about five kids navigating the world after the untimely death of their parents,” wrote Lippman and Keyser. “Today, stories of families being separated, children having to raise themselves in the wake of their parents’ deportations, don’t require any imagination; they are everywhere. This new iteration of Party of Five isn’t a retread of the original; it’s a whole new look at kids trying to parent each other in the wake of circumstances beyond their control, yet learning a similar lesson: that families persist no matter how great the obstacles.”

It sounds as though everyone on board has put a lot of thought in the story they’re looking to tell and we can’t wait to check out the Party of Five reboot when it makes its way to air on Freeform.
