Paramore has risen from the ashes of their past in a bold and vibrant way with their release of “Now”–the first single off of their upcoming self-titled album.

With a new sound that combines both new-wave, electro and throw-backs to their pop/punk days, “Now” is indicative of the direction the band has taken in their first album since 2009’s Brand New Eyes and the departure of Josh and Zac Farro in 2010.

“It just feels like the perfect way to start this new journey we are embarking on not only as a band but as a movement,” the trio said in a blog post. “To show people that you can lose battles but come back and win full on wars. You can rise from ashes. You can make something out of even less than nothing. The only thing you have to do is keep moving forward!”

True to their word, the remaining members of Paramore have done just that.

“Now” is lyrically charged with a haunting image to the band’s struggles over the last three years, “I thought we could brave it all/ I never thought that what would take me out/ was hiding down below.”

Reminiscent of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Karen O and No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani, Hayley Williams uses a combination of spoken and sung lyrics which adds to the metamorphosis the band has undergone during their small hiatus and their return to music.

Not only are William’s vocals a force to be reckoned with on this track but the musical talents of guitarist Taylor York and bassist Jeremy Davis aid the band’s new direction.

With swelling guitar riffs that lead heavily into the the anthemic chorus, “If there’s a future, we want it,” York showcases his musical talents on the guitar and in the production of their fourth album.

During a recent interview with RollingStone, Williams explained how important York’s work was during the creative process Paramore.

“All of a sudden I saw this mad scientist come out of him,” she told the magazine in a joint interview with York. “ And he just became really an incredible producer as well. He was doing all of our demos and all of our tracks for that, and it was great.”

Having been overshadowed on stage by the plethora of guitars the band once held, York proves himself on “Now” and it only adds to the band’s strength as their April release fast approaches.
