A Paper Towns movie is headed for the screen, but who should star opposite Nat Wolff in the adaptation of John Green’s bestselling novel?

The Fault in Our Stars is still to premiere, but all eyes are already on the next John Green adaptation. Green’s bestselling novel Paper Towns is being adapted for screen by Fault studio Fox 2000. Fault screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber are also on board, and Wyck Godfrey is returning as producer. And this time, author John Green will executive produce.

Paper Towns will reportedly be designed around Nat Wolff at Quentin; Wolff portrays Isaac in The Fault In Our Stars. With the Quentin casting all wrapped up – who will Quentin’s mysterious childhood friend, neighbour and love interest, Margo Roth Spiegelman, be?

We have a few ideas.

Mae Whitman

Where have I seen her? Parenthood as Amber Holt; The Perks of Being a Wallflower as Mary Elizabeth.

Whitman was on everyone’s list to play Hazel in The Fault in Our Stars, but to us she is Margo all over. She is the perfect quality of dreamy and edgy. You could absolutely believe that this is a girl who exacts revenge on everyone who has wronged her, in between reading Sylvia Plath and filling a Moleskin notebook with plans for the future.

There is an undefinable quality about Whitman that has us believing someone would drive across the country just to see her. She has already showed off her acting chops on Parenthood, and in Paper Towns she could really show what she could do.

Lily Collins

Where have I seen her? The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones as Clary Fray; Stuck in Love as Samantha Borgens.

Collins and Wolff have worked together in Stuck in Love, the previous film from The Fault In Our Stars director Josh Boone. Admittedly, they might have played siblings in that film, but it proved that they work well together on screen (and it didn’t stop Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort).

With no Paper Towns director announced as yet, there is still the possibility that Boone will be the next Fault alum to sign on to the project – and maybe he will bring Collins with him. In Stuck in Love Collins was clever, vulnerable, and confrontational – essentially, she was in training to play Margo.

Shay Mitchell

Where have I seen her? Pretty Little Liars as Emily Fields; Aaron Stone as Irina Webber.

In Pretty Little Liars, Mitchell has brought an intelligent and complex character to life in Emily Fields. The storyline surrounding Emily’s sexuality gave Mitchell the chance to explore the nuances of her character, and it gave her some great practice for Margo’s tenuous relationship with her parents.

Paper Towns would be a big break for Mitchell, and could see her transition from television to film. Plus, she has been dancing since the age of five, so those dancing scenes with Q will be a breeze.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Where have I seen her? Scott Pilgrim vs. the World as Ramona Flowers; Final Destination 3 as Wendy Christensen.

Winstead is a little older that the other actresses on this list, but she convincingly played a variation on the pixie dream girl in Scott Pilgrim, and she could do it again in Paper Towns. Winstead looks the way we imagined Margo when we first read Paper Towns, and she brings a mystery to her performances that matches the character well.

In real life, there might be a big age difference between Wolff and Winstead. However, it doesn’t look like there is, and we think the two could work incredibly well together on screen.

AnnaSophia Robb

Where have I seen her? The Carrie Diaries as Carrie Bradshaw; Bridge to Terabithia as Leslie Burke.

Yes, we know that Robb’s blonde hair will not sit well with Paper Towns fans. Luckily, the wonderful invention of brown hair dye means that she is not out of the running for this role. And hair colour aside, Robb has a unique look that physically matches the Margo in our heads more than any other actress on this list.

In The Carrie Diaries, Robb showed the abundance of creative energy that comprises such a huge part of Margo’s character. Her recent turn as Susanna in The Way Way Back proved that she could just as easily pull of the emotional scenes required for this role.

Zoë Kravitz

Where have I seen her? Divergent as Christina; X-Men: First Class as Angel Salvadore.

Zoë Kravitz is an up and coming star in the world of adaptations. Her portrayal of Dauntless transfer Christina in the newly released Divergent is sure to turn heads, and she will only get more attention as work begins on sequel Insurgent. Even in her supporting role, Kravitz’s demonstration of strength and charisma will have people talking.

As for Paper Towns, there is something mischievous about Kravitz’s portrayals that would certainly suit Margo. At the same time, we have no trouble believing that she could cut ties with everyone she knows, because she also brings a certain edge, that verges between defensive and ruthless.
