Panic by Lauren Oliver is the latest YA novel to be optioned by a major studio. In this case, Universal managed to option the film even though there was a bidding war for the project.

According to The Wrap, Panic was optioned in a seven figure deal late Monday night. There is no word who else was involved in the bidding war for the option.

Marc Platt will produce the project for Universal, which is keeping plot details under wraps. Maradith Frenkel, Universal’s VP of production, will oversee the project for the studio.

Lauren Oliver confirmed via twitter in April that Panic is a stand-alone novel and will fit into the genre of realistic fiction. It tells the story of a small Upstate New York town where the teens play a very dangerous game every summer.

“I’m thrilled about Universal’s enthusiasm and passion for the project, and excited about the chance to bring this story to the big screen,” said Oliver.

Oliver is most notable known for her Delirium series, which recently ended. Panic will be a return to realistic fiction which is where it all began for Oliver with Before I Fall.

Oliver is also the founder of Paper Lantern Lit, a book packing company specializing in young adult novels.
