Guillermo del Toro announced Thursday afternoon that Pacific Rim 2 is in development!
Pacific Rim 2, a follow up to the original science fiction epic released in July 2013, will be released April 7, 2017. Zak Penn (Avengers, Incredible Hulk) will write the picture with del Toro.
In addition, a new animated series is in development which will be based on the comic series.
In an announcement posted to YouTube, del Toro spoke about today’s news:
The first Pacific Rim grossed $400 million worldwide with Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures working together. It starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman.
The sequel will be developed under Universal, who now works with Legendary.
