As Blizzard published the Overwatch D.va short titled “Shooting Star,” we were once again reminded why she’s so great.

Hana “D.va” Song is probably one of the most popular characters in Overwatch, if not the first on the list. And why wouldn’t she be? She’s an adorable Korean girl who’s the number one gaming champion in her home country. More importantly, she uses her gaming skills to defend her country from Omnics that try to attack her city of Busan and the rest of Korea.

Just like the other heroes of Overwatch, we are only given bits and pieces of their backstory. More information is supplied to us through the comics, through special events Blizzard hosts, and the shorts that they also put out. It’s D.va’s time to shine in the new short “Shooting Star”!

Warning: If you plan on watching the Overwatch D.va short, I suggest you go see it now because I will be spoiling some things.

Ah, D.va, I absolutely adore you. I adored you the moment I picked up Overwatch and realized I could easily kick butt with you. You were adorable, your lines were cute (“winky face!”), and as a gamer girl, I love gamer girls.

The short gives us a glimpse of our girl’s life. We all know how she was drafted to be part of the MEKA force to fight the Omnics that attack Korea. In the beginning, a newscaster on a holovid is complimenting D.va and her team on a job well done against a recent Omnic attack. While the rest of the team are relaxing after getting severely injured, D.va is in the MEKA Headquarters working on her beautiful pink beast. She’s not alone, though—with her is a long-time friend that we’ve never seen before.

Taeyeon has clearly been friends with D.va since they were kids. While it doesn’t seem like he controls a MEKA of his own, he still plays an important role in D.va’s life and in MEKA Headquarters.

D.va’s focused on upgrading her MEKA, ignoring how her friend tells her that she should go out, relax, and relish in the limelight the recent news has given her. After years of being a gaming icon, even she thinks it’s overrated and she would rather be at Headquarters with her MEKA and be at the ready for another Omnic attack. But there’s more to it than that.

The recent attack has certainly dealt a blow to D.va. As she’s touching a damaged piece of her MEKA, it cuts briefly to the attack and how her team barely made it out alive, a sign of her suffering from PTSD. One of her many catchphrases is that she “plays to win” and she certainly puts that to play as she fights the Omnics. However, she knows that this isn’t a game where if she loses a life, she can just restart and play again.

In this continuing war against the Omnics, D.va knows that the moment she loses, everything is in danger — her country, her family, her friends, and so much more would be destroyed if even one Omnic makes it through their defenses. And this is something that she can’t allow.

Her dear friend Taeyeon reminds her that she’s not the only one who needs to do this alone. While that’s great advice, especially in this time of war, it isn’t something that D.va takes to heart as much as she should.

And that’s when the Fire Nation attacked — a set of Omnics come surging towards the city, completely out of schedule from what MEKA Headquarters have learned.

Instead of waiting for reinforcements, D.va takes off on her own to fight, against Taeyeon’s wishes.

These Omnics are much different than what she’s used to fighting. They’re smaller, faster, have tendrils that help them fly around and rip things apart, and are not ready to give up their goal of attacking Busan. D.va is not one to give up and she manages to defeat four out of five of the Omnics that are attacking. The fifth one gives her problems and even manages to rip off one of her MEKA arms.

This is when D.va realizes that she really can’t do this alone. It’s like a revelation and her first instinct is to call out to the one person who’s still at headquarters: Taeyeon. And this is where we see exactly what he’s good at. He’s quick to give D.va a rundown on what’s wrong with her MEKA and what should be done. While she doesn’t follow his advice, she does come up with a brilliant idea.

We’ve all been there — whether it’s in quick play, arcade, or even in competitive play, the moment we hear D.va’s popular line “Nerf this!”, you know to run for cover. In this short, the core of her MEKA is close to overheating and that’s the only way to defeat this super powerful Omnic. Taeyeon is able to provide assistance to the MEKA and under D.va’s orders, he works on overheating it even more so that it can self-destruct (and we get a chance to see her using her light gun and blasting this Omnic right in the face). But it’ll take more time than she cares for it to explode and do the damage she needs.

So, what does she do? D.va ejects herself from her MEKA, aims at the reactor, and shoots it until it finally explodes and kills the Omnic. But what about D.va, who is falling into the ocean after being blasted by her own mech?

The next few scenes are of D.va getting rescued and in the hospital with Taeyeon by her side, in and out of conciseness as medics work on getting her stabilized.

If you’re panicking, relax.

A newscast is playing on the holovid about D.va’s heroic efforts, claiming that authorities said she survived without a scratch. That’s far from the case since D.va herself emerges with a brace on her arm—and her left arm in a sling, and her left leg in a cast, along with a few other scraps and bruises that the newscast didn’t bother to mention. She’s fine for the most part, working on another MEKA even though she’s supposed to be resting. Luckily, Taeyeon is there to keep an eye on her and to receive a wonderful compliment from our favorite girl.

As someone who’s watched the shorts plenty of times before, I have to say that this is my favorite one. Not because it features a character I main, but because it gave us a different glimpse of who D.va is as a character.

There are people who speculate that D.va is just a promotion and a cater to people who want that cute gamer girlfriend but are still in love with her. Regardless of that fact, “Shooting Star” has shown us a side we’ve never seen before.

She clearly has a great love for her country and would do anything to protect it, such as overworking herself and always being considered on active duty. The PTSD she suffers from was short, but it was enough for the audience to realize that this is something she’s going through. Her sense of duty to her country keeps her from asking for help, but that’s something she plans on working on.

Thank you, Blizzard, for giving us the Overwatch D.va short that I’ve always wanted to see. If you haven’t seen it yet, I suggest you do!
