In an interesting marketing move, independent gaming system Ouya’s CEO has announced that the Android-powered system will release a new system with major updates every single year, but always for the same price.

This report comes in from IGN, who stated that the Kickstarter funded system will see a new “generation” every year. However, it will always be $99 for the new system, and will maintain backwards compatibility.

The Ouya will use numerical iterations for every “generation” of its console that is released, ie. Ouya 2, Ouya 3, etc.

We recently reported that the Ouya system was going to be available for purchase at stores like Target and Wal-Mart as of June 2013. The owners of Ouya state that it will always allow free-to-play content, a la Team Fortress 2.

We think it’s odd that Ouya will see a new iteration every year, in that in a typical console’s lifespan is for about 4-6 years, as is seen by the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3.

However, this is exactly the line of marketing that Ouya’s creators tend to purport, in that they claim on their Kickstarter page that they are looking to break the mold of what is expected in the gaming industry.

Ouya’s creators claim that they are looking to break the mold of the $50-60 price point of current games, will continue to have their low price of $99 for their console, and that they will demand for gaming publishers to release free-to-play content for their games.

What do you think about Ouya’s bold decisions? Do you appreciate that they are looking to break the mold of how the video game industry has evolved?
