Outlander book fans should be excited to see a colorful character leap from the pages of the novel to the screen this week.

The Duke of Sandringham, played by the wonderful, and larger than life Simon Callow, will finally make his on screen debut this Saturday.

The Duke has been referenced several times during the season, notably in the very first episode. Claire overhears Frank and the Reverend Wakefield talking in the 1940’s about the Duke’s supposed influence. Both Wakefield and Frank surmise that Sandringham was the most likely patron or protector of Black Jack Randall. They feel that for Black Jack to have gotten away with various atrocities, he would have needed a protector who had influence not only in the region, but in London as well.

Claire, when she is held captive by Randall, attempts to use this information to her advantage. She name drops the Duke of Sandringham, suggesting that she worked for him in some capacity. That information noticeably gets Black Jack’s attention; however, Claire can’t maintain the ruse with enough detail, and puts her foot in her mouth prompting the starts of the first savage attack by Black Jack.

The most recent reference was was this past week by Dougal, Ned, and Colum. It was suggested that they speak to Sandringham, who might be induced to enact a pardon on Jamie’s behalf since things did not work out with Horrocks. Additionally, Ned suggests getting Sandringham’s opinion on the state of the Jacobites isn’t a bad idea. Perhaps the most interesting detail is Dougal’s quip that the men should watch their backsides near the Duke. It’s meant literally, not figuratively. The Duke has a taste for young men, and doesn’t like taking “no” for an answer.

In this video, Claire is chatting with the Duke, who seems disinclined to believe anything negative about Black Jack. He’s very wrapped up in his own dubiously clever witticisms.

In the second video, there is a second fan favorite scene. Claire and Geillis encounter a baby in the woods, and Geillis has to explain the danger of a changeling to Claire.

Outlander airs Saturday on Starz at 9:00pm ET/PT.
