After a groundbreaking premiere, Outlander has been renewed by Starz for a second season! It looks like the kilt will drop for a second go round.

Today Chris Albrecht, Starz Chief Executive Officer, announced that Outlander has been picked up for “at least” a 13-episode run. The second season is to be based on the events of book two of the Outlander book series titled Dragonfly in Amber.

Explaining the decision to renew so early Albrecht says, “The overwhelming support Outlander has received from the fans, viewers and critics made the decision for us to go ahead with the second book a very easy one. Diana Gabaldon has given us years of great drama. With an incredible artist such as Ronald D. Moore at the helm and a cast as spectacular as this, we look forward to continue this spell-binding journey with Claire, Jamie, Frank, Brianna, Roger and everybody over the centuries.”

Author Diana Gabaldon is in the U.K. for the Outlander premiere there. She had this to say via her official Twitter account.

The first season of Outlander premiered on August 9 and set a multiplatform viewing record with over 5 million views in the first week. The series also had great media and social media success for Starz as well as recaching the number one spot in Nielsen ratings for Twitter conversation volume.

Outlander is developed by Ronald D. Moore with executive producer Jim Kohlberg. The series is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining and Supply Company and Left Bank Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser is doing a Q & A later today. The renewal is sure to be a topic of conversation.

The second episode of Outlander is set to air Saturday August 16 at 9 p.m. ET on Starz.
