Outlander season 3 returns on Starz September 10. No worries if you haven’t caught on until now, as season 3 is one of the best points to jump into this romance-meets-adventure-meets-historical-drama saga.

Sure, many people say you can jump into a series at any time, but with Outlander season 3, it’s really true. Essentially, the series is kind of resetting the timeline, so you’re not going to be too burdened with catching up with an overload of information.

That said, here’s what you should know before going into season 3 blind:

Season 1 and 2 in a nutshell

It’s 1945 in Scotland, and Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a former British army nurse, accidentally travels back in time via a standing stone to eighteenth century Scotland. She spends two years in Scotland and France. Initially, Claire tries to get back to the present to reunite with her husband Frank (Tobias Menzies), but eventually she decides to stay because she’s fallen in love with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a Scottish laird.

Jamie, like most Highlanders, was a supporter of restoring the Catholic monarchy to Scotland and England, and he despises the occupying British army. Among those Jamie has had run-ins with is Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies), a sadistic army officer who bears an uncanny resemblance to Claire’s twentieth century husband Frank, his descendant.

Despite their best efforts to change history and circumvent the disastrous Battle of Culloden, where the Scottish clans are decimated, Jamie and Claire are unsuccessful. Knowing that likely starvation and death await them if they both remain in Scotland, Claire travels back to the twentieth century because she is pregnant with Jamie’s child.

Back in the twentieth century, Claire raises Jamie’s child, Brianna (Sophie Skelton), with Frank in an often frost-filled and cantankerous relationship at best. Claire stops looking for evidence that Jamie survived Culloden, as almost no one did, and those that did were executed as traitors to the crown. Twenty years pass, and a widowed Claire travels back to Scotland with Brianna. Claire relates to Brianna and Roger Wakefield (Richard Rankin), a family friend and historian, her unbelievable story. Eventually, Roger and Brianna come to believe Claire’s account, and Roger subsequently finds circumstantial evidence that Jamie may have survived Culloden.

What to expect in season 3

Season 3 will touch on four main areas. First, viewers will get to see what Jamie and Claire’s lives were like apart from each other for 20 years. Second, there will be a hunt through time to find Jamie Fraser. Is he truly still alive 20 years later, and if so, where is he? Third, well of course he’s still alive or else we wouldn’t have a series.

Jamie and Claire’s reunion happens to be my favorite scene in all of the Outlander novels. As showrunner Ron Moore is well aware, if he doesn’t nail this scene, the fandom will come for his head. Fourth, what adventures will Jamie and Claire undertake now that they are together, and what will become of Brianna in the present?
