Outlander fans are, of course, drawn to Jamie and Claire, but they are equally drawn to the characters they love to hate.

Tobias Menzies plays both Frank Randall and Frank’s villainous ancestor Black Jack Randall. Despite the fact that he plays two terribly unlikeable characters, Menzies seems to amassed himself a legion of fans. There were an awful lot of fans with “Team Tobias” awaiting his arrival at last week’s red carpet premiere.

In fairness to Menzies, the character of Frank is far more likeable on screen than on the page, and we’ve only just scratched the surface on the horrors of what Black Jack is capable of. On top of that, fans are generally savvy enough to separate the actor from his work. In interviews, Menzies comes off as slightly shy and self-effacing, though he has a really quick wit given half a chance.

When we spoke to Menzies, we asked him if he missed playing Frank during the back end of the first season. Executive Producer Ron Moore announced at the 2015 TCAs that Frank would not appear any longer in season 1. Menzies thinks he will miss him a bit, but he stated that Frank will be seen in other seasons, likely in flashback sequences.

One of the other things we talked to Menzies about was Black Jack’s relationship with Jamie and Claire, played by Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, respectively. Which one is Black Jack more resentful of? Menzies feels that it isn’t resent so much as something else, which he reveals in the interview below. It’s something of a completely twisted respect and admiration.

Another cast member fans are drawn to is Gellis Duncan, played by Lotte Verbeek. Verbeek is a wonderful professional. We encouraged Verbeek to put on her representative’s coat before speaking with us. A door to the red carpet enclosure had been propped open, and Verbeek was freezing. We could quite literally see her shivering and the goosebumps on her arms as she worked her way down to our camera position. She was worried it would ruin our shot, but we assured her it wouldn’t and that no one would care.

We asked about Geillis’ relationship with Claire, and whether she considers Claire a threat or friend, as well as Geillis’ love of manipulation.

Make sure you check out our interview from yesterday when we spoke with Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe.. Heughan revealed there’s an upcoming mystery character who is a spoiler and he can’t discuss.
