Outlander‘s Graham McTavish and Gary Lewis talk the very interesting relationship between Colum and Dougal McKenzie.

Gary Lewis plays Colum McKenzie, the Laird and Chief of Clan McKenzie. Essentially he is the king of his own little fiefdom. His brother, Dougal McKenzie, played by Graham McTavish, is War Chief of Clan McKenzie. In other words, he is the enforcer for the law that his brother chooses to lay down. Sometimes the brothers are on the same page and sometimes they are not.

We had the chance to speak to them at the Outlander premiere. With these two, it’s a challenge just to get them to focus when they are next to each other.

Before our video rolled, they had just gone on a completely spontaneous five minute riff in exaggerated broad Scottish accents about the comforts of castle life, or the lack thereof. It was like being caught between Robin Williams and Billy Crystal, only with Scottish accents. They had an audience of roughly 10 press members within earshot, and we all couldn’t breathe because we were laughing so hard. Eventually, they came up for air, and we got to our question.

We asked Graham McTavish and Gary Lewis about the cantankerous relationship that the brothers have with each other and with others. Both play strong-willed characters who have their own agendas. We wanted to know how each of them viewed their brotherly relationship, but more than that, we wanted to know what they thought the fatal flaw of each of their characters was. Additionally, outside of each other, whom do they consider to be their greatest ally and their greatest threat?

Though they did answer the question, there are some slight spoilers for non-book readers. The really fun part is after they answered our questions, they started talking about the bird that Colum has in Castle Leoch’s library. With a completely straight face, Graham accuses Gary of bird murder and chaos ensues. At this point, we’re just desperately trying not to laugh, and the two proceed to do everything they can to make us break.

Cue one red carpet assistant, who is out of frame, throwing up her hands and giving up on trying to control the two of them. Just off camera, she is wildly gesturing to wrap it up. We’re still not sure how we managed to end it.

In case you missed it, also check out our red carpet interviews with Sam Hueghan and Catriona Balfe, as well as Tobias Menzies and Lotte Verbeek.

Outlander airs this Saturday, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on Starz.
